HAD BULLET IN HIS HEART

LIVED FOR

23 YEARS

Lille, Saturday.

To have a bullet lodged in the heart and still be alive 23 -years later.

France's most competent authorities have voted the thing impossible up to now, but at 'last they are forced to accept Indisputable evidence that the Impossible has happened.

A few days ago M. Maurice Bailleul, a farmer Nving in this region, who had been twice wounded during the war, had a serious heart attack

When doctors submitted him to an ray examination in the local hospital they were astonished to dis- cover a 'bullet lodged in the heart.

REFUSES OPERATION

It must have remained there for at least 23 years-since Bailleul's last wound before discharged from Army.

the

Some of the grealest authorities on wounds who have been called in consider the case of M. Balleul one of the most miraculous that han ever come under their notice. The patient has been told that the only way

ossible danger from the bullet is to submit to operation for its removal, but he has refused.

"I have lived with it twenty-three years now," he retorts. "I will take my chance of living another twenty- three rather than risk death under the operation."

Specialists admit that the odds are heavily against a successful operation, but insist that, so far as their science can be relied upon, the odds are many times greater against a man living with a bullet in his heart, although Bailleul has done so for twenty-three years,

even

Since returning to his farm after the invaders had been expelled from France, Bailleul hins shared in all the hard work of his calling und, until the seizure that led to the bullet being discovered, he had given no signs of being afflicted in this way.

11-Year Old Referee Swallowed Whistle

While 11-years-old Desmond Sollis, son of Mr. and Mrs. F. T. Sollis, of Weymouth, was refereeing a scratch game of football in the Central School playground, somebody kicked Desmond by mistake. He sucked instead of blowing-and swallowed his whistle!

In hospital, X-rays revealed the whistle in his stomach. No difficulty is expected in removing it.

Told Truth For Enemies All The

By ROSE MARIE HODGSON

Day, Way

"Tell the truth to-day," said the News Editor. "I don't mean only when you write your story. I mean all day long. Be candid. Say what you really believe. Then let's hear about it. Start right now.”

"All right," I said, "I will. Why do you give me such embarrassing You don't look the kind of jobs? man who'd enjoy making a girl look a fool. I don't suppose you know the reporters all call you archdeacon," with that blond, genial face of yours."

That set the archdeacon bock a bit. He said: "It's not done to write about the strif." Maybe it's set me back still further, Maybe this is the last truthful column I'll ever write.

And so it went all day. I made more enemales in eight hours than I've made in right years before.

CATTISH

In the morning I went to a dress show. Designer was one of my friends Will recenuy,

"What do you really think of my collection?" she asked anxiously.

"Not much. I'm afraid," I answer- ed. "Colours are bad. Styles are fussy. You've gone to pieces."

"Well," she stamped." "You little beast, Rose Marie." How dare you say such a thing! And you standing there wearing a frock designed for a girl at least four years younger than you are. It's some comfort that you've no idea what's what, anyway, I'm sorry you came."

She looked as though she'd cry any minute, so I rushed off to a luncheon date.

CANDID

Sald my hostess!

"My husband just doesn't know how I stand the pace, up till twe and three night ofter night, and always as fresh as a daisy. But I sometimes think I do show it:

"Well, you do looks a bit grey in the face, perhaps, and there are lines under your eyes, to be perfectly candid," I said. "You ought to try eloven o'clock bedtime."

But she thought I was joking, couldn't possibly mean such a thing. Pon- Laughed a little uncertainly, dered through the soup and fali, and
