NAVY ESTIMATES UP BY £1,600,000 Britain's Defence Total For 1938 Reaches Staggering All-Time Record British Spy Ring Smashed By Secret Service Blonde NO ONE KNOWS WHO SHE IS
54 NEW SHIPS IN YEAR: FLEET AIR ARM
By Hector C. Bywater THE Navy Estimates for
1938, reach a total of £123,707,000, an increase of £18,642,000 over last year.
This sum, with the £106,- 400,000 for the Army and £102,720,000 for the Royal Air Force, brings the total expenditure on defence to £332,927,000.
Of the gross amount for the Navy, £30,000,000 will be provided from the Con- solidated Fund, under the terms of the Defence Loans Act, 1937, thus reducing the net total to be provided to £93,707,000.
Later in the year a Sup- plementary Estimate probably not exceeding £3,000,000, will be introduced to cover the cost of preliminary work on the new building programme, for which the no provision is made in estimates.
The personnel of the Navy is to be increased by 7,000, raising the total to 119.000 officers and men, Naval re

Blonde "Miss X," trump card in Britain's counter-espionage ser- vice, sat in the Old Bailey library recently while in Mr. Justice Hawke's court three men whom her activities brought to justice were sentenced.
The men were:
Percy Eded Glading, 45-years-old revo- lutionary, spy, and saboteur, of Warwick- avenue, South Harrow; six years' penal servitude.
Albert Williams (39), war-wounded examiner in the department of the Chief Inspector of Arma ments at Woolwich Arsenal; four years; and
George Whomack (54), frall-looking ex-councillor, assistant foreman in Gun Section, Department of Naval Ordnance, Woolwich, of Olytte-avenue, Welling, Kent; three years.
"MISS X" SCREENED
"Miss X" did not appear in court; the three men catered "guilty" pleas to Oficial Secrets Act charges brought against them, and it was therefore not necessary for her to give evidence.
She was driven to the Old Bailey in a special car provided by the City pollee. It swept into the court- yard through the judges' entrance, and the huge wooden gotes were closed before she steppd out of the car. Throughout the pollee court hearing of the charges against Glading, Williams, and Who- mack "Miss X" was guarded by Secret Service men; that guard was maintained yesterday, and
