This additional salaries given to the staff have caused this increase.

The Chinese translator's salary has been increased - and 3 Inspectors of Nuisances, & Interpreters, & 2 Gravediggers have been transferred from other departments.

The salaries of two of the Porters have been increased, and a portion of the salary sanctioned by the Secretary of State for the Postmaster at Yokohama, has been added. The Contingencies of the Department have also been increased by $600 to provide for the travelling expenses of the marine Porters.

The salary of the Clerk has been increased by $100. It is also, by order of the Secretary of State, in receipt of $50 as Deputy Registrar General.

A Boatman has been substituted for a Carpenter.

The salary of the 1st Clerk has been increased by $60, and that of the Chief Clerk by $24 per annum.
