OUR GUIDE

TO THE CINEMAS

(King's Theatre,

to-

"Big City" day). This film, directed by Frank Borzage, one of Hollywood's nce directors, touches heights of unutter- able pathos but also includes some excruciatingly funny scenes, Pic- ture-goers may find it difficult to un- derstand the point of the story, but there can be no question of the fine acting of Luisc Rainer, Spencer Tracey and n big cast.

"Every Day's A Hoilday" (Queen's Theatre, to-day)Since Mae West insists on writing her own stories and since somebody, presumably the Hays office, is equally insistent

on taking the characteristic quality out of them, there is really litio left in Mae West picture these days but

1 series of undulations. Flanked by three eminent comedians, Miss West curves from north to south and again from west to east, taking in all the intermediate points of the compass. Edmund Lowe, Charles Butterworth, Charles Winninger and Walter Cat- lett help to make a success of the plcture.

"The Barrier" (Alhambra Theatre, to-day).--Spread across t1 back- ground of the breath-taking scenic splendour of the great North woods, the flm tells the love story of oni officer and a simple woods girl. The barrier is that the girl is suspected of having Inklian blood In her veins, but everything is cleared up for a happy ending. Leading characters are portrayed by Jean Parker, James Eilson, Otto Kruger and Leo Carrillo.

"Ebb Tile" (Oriental Theatre, Lo- day). This film proved popular when shown before and should find a wide appeal again. Oscar Homol- kn, Franers Farmer and Ray Milland play the leading roles.

"Come and Get It" (Majestie Theatre, to-day).-In all pictures in which Edward Arnold appears, he Is the driving force, and this one is no exception to the rule. In spite of the the work put in by the sup- porting cast which includes Joel McCrea, Andrea Leeds and Frances Farmer. Arnold is the ecntral figure. picture provides more than average entertainment.
