Registering at a cheap hotel, the next morning Jean Hersholt' gets directions to the Balboa Film Company, thirty miles away near Long Beach.
Journey by tram consumes one-and-a-half hours. He finds the place at last, one shed, an open lot. Mr. Horckheimer offers Hersholt a chance if he will work for nothing.
"This is a new business," says the producer, "I can't afford to pay a lot of actors."
With £5 in his pocket Jean Hersholt returns to Los Angeles. Next day he hears about Thomas H. Ince, who is making cowboy films near Santa Monica.
Two hours by tram, an hour's walk along the beach. Hersholt sees the manager. He gets a job at £3 10s. a week.

On the strength of his success Hersholt-takes-a- room at-Ocean--- Purk, Santa Monica, at a rent of £2 10. a month, starts saving money. Six months later Via Andersen pays her own fare from Montreal, arrives in San Francisco.
Hersholt gets permission from Ince to meet her. On April 11, 1913, they are married in Sans Angar Church, San Francisco, return to Ocean Park to set up housekeeping on £3 10s, a week.
They rent a two-roomed bungalow for £3 a month. Their son Alan is born there the fol- lowing year.
And Hersholt, playing half a dozen different parts in every one-reeler, is raised to £4 a week. NINETEEN FIFTEEN. Ince moves to Culver City, to the site that is now part of the huge M.G.M. lot.
