STRIKE AT END

Book Company Workers Accept Mediation

A strike by about 1,000 employées of the Chung Hwa Book Company, a large Chinese publishing concern) with its head offices in Shanghal, Look place at the Ma Tau Wal works, Kowloon, yesterday morning. but collapsed almost as quickly as it started.

The strikers, mostly Shanghai men, struck suddenly ni 9 a.m. yes- terday, when they barriended them- Belver inside the compound and re- fused to allow anyone in or out. Similar trouble occurred recently in Shanghai.

Trouble had been anticipated by the local management for some time, us the Secretary for Chinese Affairs had been consulted about six. weeks ago about certain disputés, which concerned the conditions of employ- ment, and whether certain should be employed on a daily or a monthly basis.

Among the police who were culled to the scene yesterday were Mr. R. H. E. Marks, Assistant Superinten- dent, and Divisional Inspector A. E. Carey.

Shortly after midday, however, the police were withdrawn from the scene, as no violence had occurred, and none of the machinery had been damaged in any way, although Mr. K. G. SHANGHAI TROUBLE

The labour trouble in the Chung Hwa Book Company, Foochow Road,

Shanghai, involving the threatened

unemployment of several thousand workers, was referred to the First Special District Court recently by the management of the Company through several lawyers. Staing that labour unrest was most unfor- tunate at the present time, Judge Kwel offered mediation, postponing the hearing to March 21.

Trouble flared up in the company soon after the shifting of hostilities from Shanghal. On account of bad business resulting from the chang- ed situation, the company was al- most completely moved to Hongkong where several thousand workers of the company in Shanghal had gone! to work. More than 2,000 employees wee eft behind. The management threatened dismiss them all after paying several months' saturies.

Upon hearing the news the work- ers protested and at one time the aftuation looked tense dince several thousand workers refused to leave the two factories of the company in Macao and Amoy Roads unless the question of their livelihood was settled.
