Making Up to Wine
URGUNDY shades are being worn a lot Just now. Some of
them are rich and glowing. like fine red wines; others have a more light-hearted air and a few are quite pale-like wine diluted with water.
They are becomitig shades and useful for cheering up dark winter outfits. A black dress worn with a bright bur- Eundy scarf and hat takes on quite a springlike air on a sunny day.
Make-up for these shades needs care.
Colours
Powders which have an ochre effect should be avoitled, and psticks in either vivid scarlet or orange tones will not walk happily with wine shades.
Choose a light, but warm, peach powder or, if you are fair, a "natural" powder is good. Lipsticks and rouges which have a slightly raspberry touch will go well with these colours.
Remember that the red of the lip- stick must have a "blue" hint in it, which will pick up the blue that in in these wine colours. Always nim at shades that will not 'clasti with whatever frock you are wearing.
Cyclamen Nails
Skins at this time of year are paler than usual, as winter days steal the healthy glow.from our checks, so use lighter powder and, in the evening, an extra touch of rouge.
Nail varnishes, by the way, are restruined, so choose soft shades. Deep rose is seen a lot or, if you want to bo dashing with a black or white evening dress, wear a pale cyclamen. Keep in mind that flower shades are on the way and make-up will take on a aweet innocent" air-a strong con- trast to the brilliant colours which were worn carlier this winter,

Paris is showing purple lilac and almond blossom pinks for lingerie. On the latter they are using dark.coffee-coloured ince. There is not nearly 50 much white, and many pat- terned materials have Liny sprays of leaves or flowers in the same colour as the fabric.

I and it is a very good plan to set aside one even- ing regularly each week for what I call my odd pieces of sewing. A nightie or a slip can be left for days if necessary, and does not require Intense concentration as to t like a dress or blouse.
Lingerie is pleasant sewing. You can pick it up for an odd half-hour here and there, chat pleasantly while working, and there is the ad- vantage of a new nightte or petti- coat to hand should you go away for a few days' holiday unex- pectedly,

Doath Of A. B. Long. Raises Questions
In Commons
London, Mar. 7,
Mr. Geoffrey Shakespeare, Parlis- mentary and Financial Secretary to the Amiralty, voiced the regret of the House of Commons at the death of A. B. George which occurred.
when H.M.Sofold and H.M.S.
Boreas were picking up and trans- ferring Baleares' survivors to the Canarias yesterday. He said that A. B. Long had been deemed killed in netion,
Mr. D. Sandys (Cons) asked if it was necessary that British lives should be risked in the work of trans- shipping rescued scamen back to a belligerent warship.
Mr. Shakespeare said that in carry- ing out the rescue, the British Navy acted in accordance with the finest tradition.
Col. J. C. Wedgwood (Lab.) asked why such rescued seamen were not interred, and Mr. Shakespeare said the Government did not take the view that they were bound by, the

After reading the article 0188-Litle Old Lady. FT. entitled "Are Women Lazy?" I am inclined to think that it was written by a presumptuous youth. I cannot conceive any ex- perienced adult making such sweeping and perfectly |irrational generalisations.
Although I am about to cele- brate my fiftieth birthday, I have yet to meet a lazy married woman. No adage is quite soj accurate, I have discovered, as the one that asserts that a housewife's work is never done.
Men may work an eight hours. day, but the housewife has no such privilege. Nevertheless, she accepts) her arduous daily, round in a philo- sophic manner. hours efforts to shame.
The writer of the article which 1 am justifiably attacking, asserts that women ennnot think for them- selves. This statement is, of course, a typical example of masculine egotiant. I would like to know how many men can think for them- selves?
The present chaotic condition of a world ruled by men reveals the fact that very few males can think at all!
The writer, who has cloaked his identity in a nom-de-plume, declares that women only attend musical or dramatic performances for enter- tainment. The average man, we play have to presume, goes to a craving for education. The idea is too palpably ridiculous to merit further comment.
"Onlonker," as he calls himself, also asserts that women only read books for entertainment. Men, on the other hand, read only to in- crease their fund of knowledge. That is why, I suppose. thrillers and detective fiction are so popular with men!
Only two things can excuse "On- looker for expressing such ridicul- ous sentiments in his article. Either he is very young and inexperienced. for he is remarkably unobservant.
Sitting in judgment on others is obviously not in his line!
