It is not a "parfe" campaign. Re- cruiting is Improving every month, but the War Ofice feel that the beat safeguard against air attack is to make our defenees complete without delay, writes the Sunday Express military correspondent.

Responsibility for the air defence of Great Britain rests on the Air Ministry, but the ranchinery of de- fence is partnership between the fighter squadrons of the Royal Air Force and the guns, scarellights, and signals of the Territorial Army.

ANTI-AIRCRAFT DIVISIONS

Two anti-aircraft divisions of the Territorial Army have been organis- edthe first covering London and the South, and the second with an area extending from Northampton to Northumberland. Further north still are certain Scottish units.

The 20,000 shortage is not so bac as it seems. The first division wa not formed until December 1935 and the second division a year later. Expansion has been con continuous.

BELT OF LIGHT

While the gap between establish- ment and strength is wide, the War Office is condent that this year's big purh will go a long way towards solving the problem.

When the two divisions are at full strength there will be a barrier

of more than 500 guns and 3,000 searchlights stretching from North- umberland to Sussex.

The searclights will be at inter- vals of two miles, forming a belt of illuminated sky deep enough to give our fighting planes room to mua- oeuvre and attack the enemy.

The latest pattern searchlights will be able to pick up an airplane Ave and a half miles high.

As for the runs, the now 3.7 inch model the best of its kind in the world-now coming into produc- tion has an effective range of mort

bomber flies during an air raid.

There is another und heavier gun, the 4.6 inch, which will also cause raiders a great deal of trouble,

POM-POM GUN

There is no denying that produc- tion of these, new guns will have to the air defence syɛ- be speeded tem is to be made effective, At pre-| seal the Territorial Army is training with the old 3-inch gun-not in the same class as the new model.

Although the Territorials wie man the searchlights and guns have only

limited time for training, their standard of enclency is extremely high-certainly not lower than that of Regular Army units trained to do the same work overseAV.

Every unit has its battle station in the event of hostilities, and the whole defence system could be brought in- to operation in a vrey short time.

The searchlights have their "gad- get," too. This is the sound locator, an instrument which picks up an air- plane long before It can be seen.

With the loentur giving an approx- imate position it is much easier for concentration of searchlight beams to have effect.

TRACKING RAIDERS

Picture an air raid of the future. As the enemy aircraft approach or cross the coast they will be picked up by trained detachments of the Ob- server Corps, a band of civilians, trained by the Air Ministry and sworn h us speciul constables, who will flash the news to the R.A.F. lighter squadrons.

One of the orguments for retaining chargers is that the average subol- tern in a cavalry regiment of the Royal Artillery joined because he knew that in addition to his pay he would receive his chargers, forage, stabling and a groom.

PART OF EMOLUMENTS

A senior cavalry offleer stated that the subaltern rightly regarded these as part of his emoluments. If they were curtalled or withdrawn he was entitled to some form of compensa-

⚫tion.

He held the view that fathers who had served in the cavalry or Rayat Artillery would no longer encourage their cons to Join the Army if they were denied facilities for hunting, polo and racing.

The point generally made is that while officers appreciate the value of the machine in war, they do not think the motor vehicle uffords them the oxercise essential for the main- tenance of physical fitrices,
