And a story of hard luck, too, for he once had a fortune.
Thut fortune was founded on the success of a Rong published years ago in the Sunday Chronicle,
The forgotten song-writer is Clif- ford Harris. the man
wrote who lyries that made stars overnight in the days of the okl music-halla.
One of his best-known songs was "Every Little While I Feel So Lonely," It brought him £1.100. He wrote it in just the time he took to smoke one cigar.
WON SONG CONTEST
With Jimmy Tate he wrote the lyrics "Gay Bachelor" and "Paradise for Two" for the "Mald of the Moun- tains."
Then came his smash hit, "You Lef Behind a Broken Doll." It sold 250,000 coples, brought in £3,000.
And now "Broken Doll" will be the title of his own te storythe story he is writing in his 10s, a week The song room in Kentish Town. that made him famous haunts him In his paverty.
Recently Clford Harris told me he Is penniless. But at 62 he is no broken doll in spirit.
