JAPANESE DRIVE Anglo-American Naval Parleys Revealed
ULTIMATELY MAY MENACE HANKOW
But Chinese Clinging Tenaciously to Flank Guarding Road to West
Hankow, Feb. 5.
With Chuchow, a town south of Pengpu, as their base, the Japanese forces are advancing northward along the Tientsin-Pukow railway line towards Hsuchowfu, while another column is advancing in a south-westerly direction towards Hofei.
The objectives of these drives are at present not ascertainable, but the Japanese seem to be aiming at a bigger and more far-reaching objective by striking over- land towards Chengchow, in Honan Province, thus outflanking the entire Chinese force along the Lunghai railway, and seriously endangering Hankow.
Aside from holding the Japanese, troops along the Hwaiho River, heavy Chinese reinforcements are at present stationed amongst the hills east of Hofei for the purpose of checking the Japanese drive to the west, and also attacking the Japanese flank on the Tientsin-Pukow railway-Reuter.
