Pengpu Falls To Violent Japanese Assault Hurry!
CHINESE LINES SHATTERED BY BOMBARDMENT
Bitter Resistance At Tingyuan Encountered
Shanghai, Feb. 3.
The capture of Pengpu, as recorded by Japanese despatches from the front, has greatly surprised observers here who expected the Chinese would hold up the attack- ing force for at least a few days. The occupation of this city is important, inasmuch as it boasted the strongest de- fence works south of Hsuchow, the main object of the present drive.
Pengpu, moreover, is an important industrial centre in Anhwei and in the course of its history has more than once found contending forces in civil wars fighting for its possession.
The Japanese now have a little more than 100 miles to go before they reach Hsuchowfu, so unless the Chinese collapse their task is still a large one.

It is no little tribute: to the Director of the 4th Route Army Medical Service, General Cheung Kin, a military surgeon still in his "thirties," that he was responsible for the establishment of Army Medical Training in Kwangtung, and for its direction over a period of eight years. General Cheung was sent by the higher military authorities to study this branch of medicine and its organisation with reference to military affairs, and upon his return completed plans for and supervised the erection of the splendid Kwang- tung Military Hospital, the Medical Academy, and the Training School.
