FOOTBALL SELECTORS SHOULD START

FORWARD LINE PRESENTS THE BIG PROBLEM

PREPARING FOR VISIT OF THE CORINTHIANS

(By "Abo")

The disappointment caused by the decision of the Hongkong Football Association not to send an Interport team to Shanghai has now given way to the greatest enthusiasm regarding the forth-- coming visit of the Islington Corinthians, the famous English amateur soccer team, to the Colony.

LIS

As this will be the first time in the history of football in the Colony that an English team phys me compliment of coming here, and in view of the splendid record of the Corinthians

during their present world tour, it behoves the local best soccer authorities to pick the possible teams in the matches against the visitors.

Due to arrive from Malaya 021 February 18, the Corinthians nre expected to play Your matches in Hongkong during thein stay of ap- proximately two weeks. They com- mence their programme on Saturday, February 19, with a match 'against the South China A.A., who invited them here. On the following day, they will play the United Services. The visitors will rest until the next week-end when they will have two more engagements. playing the Civilians on February 20 and whole of Hongkong on February 27.

Naturally South China and the Services will select their DWI representatives but it will be up to the Hongkong Football Association to pick teams to represent the Civillons and the Colony, Hére, it is to be hoped, the best feums will be chosen.

A, SUGGESTION

the

For whatever It is worth, I jul forward the suggestion .thuk the Association selects the Civilian and Colony elevent as soon as possible, preferably about a fortnight before the arrival of the Corinthians, so that the players may have an opportunity of getting together and settling down

LA

a team. Very often in the course of the present season we have seen 11 good individual players chosen for

matches but representative seldom have they satisfied loenl critics with regard to their combina- tion as a team. This is where the Chinese huve the advantage over other teams in the Colony in the big matches; and for this reason many experts are inclined to the view that the first garne, between South China and the visitors, will be the best of the four.

_Unless_the Association selgefors gel to work right away to get the Civillan and Hongkong teams together, I personally agree with this view. There are enough good players here. to be welded into a useful eleven, capable of offering reasonable wp- position to the Corinthions. The thing to do is to pick them out now and let teem got used to one another's type of play.

Let us leave the Chinese and the Services' teams alone for the moment,

What material, have we got for the Civilian and Hongkong teams?

Flest Division clubs from which Civilian players can be picked, apart from the South China ÂA., tre St. Joseph's Hongkong F.C., Kowloon F.C., Police, Eastern und Kowloon Chinese. As South China will be the only club to field its own side against the Corinthians, it does not seem fair that any of the Caroline Hili players should be chosen to play for the Civilians. For this purpose I shall deal with players from the other six clubs mentioned.

.

AVAILABLE MATERIAL:

First of all, a goal-keeper. Monning (Polleo) turned out for the Civilians In the La Wah Cup recently. and though 1 applauded his selection, his display that day against the Chinese left plenty of room for improvement, However, if he is not chosen, have only two others who are euable of stepping into his shoes. They are Sammy Tsang (Eastern) and R. Marques (St. Joseph's). However, neither of these two can be relied upon, with any degree of confidence to do better than the Police officer: therefore I think Maining would be as good as anyone the Selectors pick.

present more ticklish problem. Those, who have been seen in action in

some

of the more important matches are Hussalts and Costa (St. Joseph's), Pile (Police) and Ulrich (Kowloon F.C.). In my opinion the two finally to be selected should be amongst these four. Of these, only one, Hussein, plays regularly at right back; the other three are usually on the left. Pite, of course, is the most ex- perienced of the lot, having played at left back for a number of years for the Police and for Hongkong in the Interport ngainst Shanghal. In Costa and Ulrich, however, he has two rivals who will run him very close for the honour. As regards the

unless right back position,

the Association can find a better man. Hussain may find himself included for lack of competition. If the Association-Selectors-ore-not-satisfied- with him. Pile could be shifted from left to right to let in either Costa Gr Ulrich; or they may care to keep, a look-out for Bone, the Police defen- der, who despite his bulk, is not a slow mover.

In a recent despatch from Adelalde to the London Dally Express, William Follock, the well-known cricket writer; discusses Australia's pro- blems in picking a team to four England this summer. This is what he

COLONY SIDE

The Colony team should be easier to pick. It is a thousand pities that so many of our best Service players will be leaving before the Corinthians arrive. Rowlands, definitely first choice as goalie, will be away, and it seems to me that the next best is Tam Kwan-hon, of South China "B." Webster, whose claims for inclusion at right back are very strong, will not be here; so we might do worko than take Mak Stu-hon and Li Tin- sang as the backs. These two have a fino understanding and 1 am sure they will not let the Colony down. If the Selectors are not keen on Mak, they might move Li to right back and include either Pile, Ulrich or Costa at left back.
