Third of a series by! ANTHONY WEYMOUTH, of Harley-'
street, on MARRIAGE
·BOOKS-Edited by ROGER
I AGREE, Miss Brown, it is a big step you're taking. And perhaps you're right when you say that marriage is an even bigger step for the woman than it is for the
man.
man.
After all, she is leaving the security of] her home to share her life with 0 Wheras he's been on his own, even though he has been living with his parents.
And he's the dominant partner. You've got to trust him, just he's got to trust you. If you've chosen well, he'll play the game ali right.
So you see, it's really up to you to make sure now that you've chosen carefully. If you're satis- filed-well, having done so, stick to your choice.

-and an Old Darling
SSUED under the auspices of the Anglo-Swedish Literary. Founda- tlon," I read on the cover of Thy Rod and Thy Staff. by Hjalmar Bergman (Cape, 78. 6d.), and iny critical heart missed a beat.
Another high-class tombstone to the vast Another gloomy cemetery of literary hopes.
monstrosity to be read out of a sense of duty and by only the Best People.
Which just shown how wrong first impres- sions can sometimes be. For, in spite of that forbidding title and a good deal of conversation with God, this is one of the most lively and opstanding novels of the year.
*
"You get the clue in the phrase, “conversation with God." Old Agnes Berck may have fancied uhe was praying, but, as a matter of fact, the was just telling Clod a number of things she thought He ought to know, asking Him such questions as. "Now, what was the use of that, good Lord?" or suggesting that, for once, Ile might do na she asked...
A masterful old woman, she was certainly surprised when the Lord spoke at inst and "töid hier that He was not her erroad-boy.She had got what she wanted, and whose fault was it if he had mado a mess of things?
Born & pensant girl, the hady married Into
A merchant family and smashed up because she considered her husband and children were more important than that tribe of uncles and cousins who wanted help.
She drove her adored son and still more adored grandsen away, and no one was more staggered when the grandson returned, not as a beggar but as a rich man. Why, he ought to have come crawling to her for forgiveness'
But the Lord didn't seem to think so. nor did He intervene when her children ventured to criticise and oven to catechise her. Could it really be that she hadn't always been perfectly righteous and perfectly justified?
Granny Borek remembers her long life for the greater part of the book. It was only to wards the end that I got a new light on certain incidents. But, whether she is telling the story or her children are saying that it wasn't at all like that, the tate goes with chor- mous rest and yet with remarkable delicacy of perception.
Granny herself is auch a terrific character that I was glad she is confined behind those bars of print. A Holy Terror-and an Old Darling... You must get to know her and the more amiable members of her clan.

BARRIE'S
Loneliness
CLUE
given in The Greenwood Int (Peter Davies, as. 6d.) to Sir James Barrie's loneliness at the height of his eminence. It shows a side of him which I discovered for myself when I came to know him
few years ago.
Late one night, in his library, he left the telephone ringing frantically in the coal-box, where he hid it (because he "hated the sight of that now-fangled con- don ", while he confided to traption me why he went on writing things which he never meant to publish. "I write to keep myself company," he said. And
Greenwood The „Hat.wns.ú.peri_of_that self-communion. It was printed in a limited edition of nity coples for private circulation Now, with an amongst his friends, introtfuction by Earl Baldwin, it has been pubished at large by his godsen, Peter Davies.
*.
Keeping hinseif company" sums It up. His companion was the young "Janiio who came to London, poor and friendless, often hungry on als four penny buns in a bag, but deter- mined to succeed. And he found him nmore Hrely companion than "Bir James Barrie, Bari, O.MI."
You can see him, through this book, revelling in his later years in the early writings of James Anon." the name under which he wrote in the old "St. James's Gazette."
There is a pathos in the relish which he took in those struggles-how le bought a top-hat to impress Frederick Greenwood, the edilar who was to give him his chance to break into London journalism, how he regretted the fact that his own insignificant appearance prevented him from being a "ladies' mman." how he wrote articles as the father of a family which he was never to possess.
Not that the book itself is a morbid affair. On the contrary, it is the pleasant excursion of an old man recovering his youth, beautifully and revealingly written, with bright asides on such thiriga as the “Allaliakbars rlés." that cricket team of famous writers and others, which he cap tained.
Allahakbar was "African" for "Heaven help us," which summed up the prowess of the team. The "rles". was added as a compliment to the captain.
Barrie contrived to put so much of that early self into his books, plays and speeches in a variety of thin disguises that those who read this volume may feel they have heard a lot of it before. For all thant, it in more than worth while as thie poal- humous autobiography of one who ex- changed the loneliness of obscurity for that of eminence.

Yes, of course, I'm sure that Mr. |Smith is all you say he is. I wasn't suggesting for one moment that you hadn't chosen well: We'll take that as rend, Miss Brown, and get down to brass tacks at once.
LET'S approach marriage from the
woman's standpoint like this. What ought you to expect from your husband?
Of course! Your husband should remala your lover, and be as deeply nbsorbed in you as the day on which he proposed to you.
But you mustn't be too exacting, Miss Brown-when you've changed your name to Smith, You'll have to remember that out party-manners tend to wear a bit thin once the party's over. In other words, you mustn't expect your husband to be always on his best behaviour.
Life isn't a party. If it were, he'd never be able to relax-and that wouldn't be natural, would 117

Does the idea of first being address- ed as Mrs. Smith appeal to you? Do you get a kick out of the thought that you'll be able to say, "My husband doesn't like me to do so-and-so?"
You see, it's natural for a woman to like being dependent on the right man. You're funny creatures, Miss Brown. I'm not really sure that any one-even a psychologist-con pro- perly understand you. Some of you seem to prefer being with a man Avho's a brute to you, rather than bringing him to book by leaving him.
But there's one consolation. You're better off then you've ever been before. Had you lived in the Middle Ages, my dear, your lord and master would have locked, you up (as he would have done his other valuables). before going off on a crusade!
