AGREE, Miss Brown, it is a big step you're

taking. And perhaps you're right when you say that marriage is an even bigger step for the woman than it is for the man.

After all, she is leaving the security of her home to share her life with в тап. Wheras he's been on his own, even though he has been living with his parents.

And he's the dominant partner. You've got to trust him, just as he's got to trust you. If you've chasen well. he'll play the game all right,

So you see, it's really up to you to make sure now that you've chosen enrefully. If you're satis- fled-well, having done so, stick to your cholce.

BOOKS-Edited by ROGER PIPPETT

A Holy Terror

-and an Old Darling

SSUED under the auspices of the Anglo-Swedish Literary Founda- tion," I read on the cover of Thy Rod and Thy Staff, by Hjalmar Bergman (Cape, 7s. 6d.), and my critical' heart missed a beat.

Another high-clans tombstone in the vast.

Another gloomy cemetery of literary hopes.

monstrosity to be read out of a sense of duty and by only the Best People.

Which just shows how wrong first impres slons can sometimes be. For, in spite of that forbidding title and a good deal of conversation with God, this is one of the most lively and upstanding novels of the year.

*

*

You get the clue in the phrase, "conversation with God." Old Agnes Börck may have fancled a matter of fact, she slie was praying, but, was just telling God a number of things she thought He ought to know, asking Him such Now, what was the use of that. questions as, good Lord" or suggesting that, for once. ite might do as she asked....

A masterful old woman, he was certainly surprised-when-the-Lord spoke_ut last and told her that He was not her errand-boy. Stic had got what she wanted, and whose fault was

It if he had made a mess of things?

Born a peasant girl, she had married into

a merchant family and smashed it up because she considered her husband and children were more important than that tribe of uncles and cousins who wanted help.

Bho drove her adored on and still more adored grandson away, and no one was more staggered when the grandson returned, not as a beggar but as a rich man. Why, he ought to have come crawling to her for forgiveness!

*

But the Lord didn't seem to think so. nor did Ho intervene when her enildren ventured to criticize and even to entechise her. Could it really be that she hadn't always been perfectly righteous--and perfectly justified?

Granny Borck remembers her long life for the greater part of the book. It was anty to wards the end that I got a new light on certain incidenta. But, whether she is telling the story or her children are saying that it wasn't at all like that, the tale goes with enor mous zest and yet with remarkable delicacy of perception.

Granny herself is such a terrific character that I was glad she is confined behind those bars of print. A Holy Terror-and an Old Darling.... You must get to know her and the more amiable members of her clan.

at the James Barrie's loneliness at the height of his eminence. It shows a side of him which discovered for myself when I came to know him a few yea

years ago.

Late one night, in his library, he left the telephone ringrig frantically in the coal-box, where he hid it (because he hated the sight of that new-fangled con- traption"), while he confided to me why he went on writing things which he never meant to pubilah. "I write to keep myself company." he sil. And The Greenwood "Hätwasu part of that self-communion: It was printed in o milted edition of tty coples for private circulation amongst his friends. Now, with an introduction by Earl Baldwin, it has been published at large by his godson, Peter Davies.

Keeping himself -company" sums it up. Jus coinpanion was the young "Jamie who came to London, poor and friendless, often hungry on his four, penny buns in a bag, but deter- mined to succeed. And he found him a more lively compaulon than "Blr James Barrie. Bari, O.M."

You can see him, through this book, revelling in his later years in the early writings of "James Anon." the numé under which he wrote, in the old "St James's Gazette."

Yes, of course, I'm sure that Mr. Smith is ult you say he is. I wasn't! suggesting for one moment that you hadn't chosen well. We'll take that as read, Miss Brown, and get down to brass lucks at once.

woman's standpoint like this, What ought you to expect from your husband?

Of course! Your husband should remain your lover, and be as deeply absorbed in you as the day on which he proposed to you.

But you mustn't. be too exacting, Miss Brown-when you've changed your name to Smith. You'll have to remember that our party-manners tend to wear a bit thin once the party's over. In other word s, you mustn't expect your husband to be always on his best behaviour.

Life isn't a party. If it were, he'd never be able to relax-and that wouldn't be natural, would il?

AND you must be careful not to look on it as a sign of his failing cellon or as u proof that he no longer respects you,

If you do, you'll probably be templed to resent It and, unless you're very careful, show him that you do. And this may very well be the basis of your arst quarrel. (By the way, it does happen, don't let it deve- lop into a condition in which you You, both night shy of each other. because of your mistaken belief; and he because he resents your suspicions), Don't ever allow yourself to be-

Don't be on the look-out for lapses on Mr. Smith's part. It's up to you to guide him in his attitude to you -without him knowing that you're doing $1.

And It's rather nice to know that you've got a husband who'll stand between you and the troubles which lone, Jorn women have to face by themselves.

There is a pathos in the relish which ho took in those struggles-how hoed as Mrs. Smith appeal to you? Do bought a top-hat to impress Frederick You get a kick out of the thought that Greenwood, the editor who was to give you'll be able to say, "My husband Dairen him his chance to break into London doesn't like me to do so-and-so?" Journaliám, how he regretted the fact that his own insignificant appearance prevented him from being a "ladies' man," how he wrote articles as lie father of a family which he was never to possess.

You see, it's natural for a woman to like being dependent on the right man. You're funny creatures, Miss Brown. I'm not really sure that any one-oven a psychologist can pro- perly understand you. Some of you teem to prefer being with a man! who's a brute to you, rather than bringing him to book by leaving him.

Not that the book itself is a morbid affair. On the contrary, it is the pleasant excursion of an old man recovering his youth, beautifully and rovealingly written, with bright sides on such inga an the "Allahakbar- rles." that cricket team of famous writers and others, which he tap, would have locked you up (as he tained.
