POLICE LOOT BANKS AND SHOPS

Chefoo, Jan. 17. This clly passed a day of terror on Saturday when members of the Peace Preservation Corps and police force, enraged by the refusal of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce to grant their request for an increase In pay, began looting In the course at this series of reprisals Chinese | businessman was killed and a Chi-

ness.boy.. wounded in the leg.-

The foreign residential district re- rained peaceful throughout the dis- turbance, as the police guarding that ares did not join their comrades.

The outbreak was started by dis- gruntled members of the Peace Pre- servation Corps, who began looling shops and banks shortly after the Chamber of Commerce turned down their demands.

The example of the Peace Preser- vation Corps was soon followed by the police lo three different areas.

Subsequently the two groups join- ed forces and kidnapped the Chair- man of the Chamber of Commerce, making oft in the direction of a vil- Lago on the western outskirts of the city.

the

Following their departure Chamber: met again and decided to accede to the demands of the police and Ponco Preservation Corps memi». bere. As a result the discontented pollet returned to the city and look morning.

The Chinese authorities with the support of loyal members of the two forces seem to have the situation well in hand. It is reported that they do not intend to punish the re- bels for fear of precipitating renew-

disorders. ed

Falling further im- provement of the situation, however, all the Chinese banks and majority of the Chinese shops have decided to remain closed.
