In regard to private practice therefore, I trust I may not be misunderstood. To solicit at the hands of Government a privilege it is so handsome, for one to which I have never - for the reason given - allowed myself to aspire.

Entirely apart from the anxieties and responsibilities attending the supervision of the expenditure of Government funds on Public Works, the wear on mind and body in the prosecution of the ordinary duties of the post in a climate so unfavourable as that of Tropical China, and the high improbability of any incumbent of the post being able, however healthy, to retain it up to the advanced age which would entitle him to retire on a colonial pension, are all considerations which, with the foregoing, will I trust weigh in favour of some improvement in the salary of the post.
