is no doubt that Mr Price is a very valuable public servant: he has placed the roads of the colony in a state that does him great credit, so Downs Fold, with the work

& contrasts most favourably

This predecessor's - His waterworks schemes, his plans for extending the Praya, & reclaiming parts of the foreshore; & the buildings he has put up - are proofs of his capacity as an Architect & Engineer. In fact, it was a common remark that he is the only real Surveyor General the Colony has had.

He is doing good work too among kinds of Chinese dwellings, & forcing the landlords

to pay

He is giving attention to sanitary matters - hard working, & in various ways very useful; he has improved the Colony; Deserving special mention are the works done at the Lyttelton, & in connection with The Cape d'Aguilar Lighthouse, & the town of Stanley.

There is also little doubt that he could double his income by private practice: he is beyond comparison the best man in his profession in the Colony: & is besides of considerable scientific attainments.

I think he well deserves

a total of £1300 (the Roth Oct 2

proposed £1500.)

Certainly £1300.
