By T. Paul Gregory
THE splendid role which this Colony has played in the recent history of its great neighbour--China-is a truly momentous one.
Hongkong, not only an account of its liberal administration but also because of its laudable zeal in fostering democratic in- stitutions, has been the leaven which has encouraged many of its Chinese citizens to work for the resurgimento or resurrection of their unclent Motherland in order that she might achieve a posi- tion of equality and respect in the comity of great nations.
Some of them, too, by reason of their intense earnestness, 7 glowing enthusiasm, and self-sacrificing devotion to the cause of Chinese nationalism have aroused the admiration of the entire world and won the esteem and gratitude of their fellow citizens.
Few, however, can be said to enjoy the 'cffulgent grandeur of an enduring fame which crowns like a balo of glory the achieve ments of him who can be claimed as one of Hongkong's most emine ent sons-Dr., Wu Ting-fang. Moreover, like Dr. Sun Yat-sen. he can be justly proclaimed "one of the greatest personalitics which China has produced during the troublous years of transition A modern from an age-old monarchical civilisation to that of Republic."
Dr. Wu Ting-fang was born at Singapore, July 9, 1842 and died at Canton, June 23, 1922.
His parents, Cantonese folk of the merchant or trading class, with praiseworthy interest in their son's future, decided that hr ghould be brought up in the true Confucian way by being nurtured, in China rather than in the hybrid milieu of Malayu. Therefore, the had was sent back to his ancestral homeland at the age of four years.
