of the General Officer in Command, through whom none of the correspondence either with the Treasury in London, or local on behalf of the Treasury, passed, and that for the application for the payment of the Military Contribution had not been made through the Assistant Military Secretary;

Upon perusal of this letter, Mr. Austin decided that the Correspondence question be sent to Colonel Bassano, the Assistant Military Secretary for the information of the Major General in order that the necessary instructions might be given to Captain Molony, Mr. Austin not feeling it in his power in view of Colonel Bassano's private note to Mr. Smith to authorize any further direct correspondence between the Colonial and Military Department.

A copy of the foregoing correspondence was accordingly sent to Colonel Bassano Assistant Military Secretary with an intimation that the Administrator was quite prepared
