Contaminated Well Was the Cause of Typhoid

Investigations in connection with Croydon's typhoid outbreak had shown contamination of water from Ad- dington well, said Dr. O. M. Holden, medical officer of health, at a meeting of Croydon Borough Council recently.
In a full statement, Dr. Holden said that to date the number of known or suspected cases of typhoid was 27. The first was notified on October 19. As inquiries did not elicit any common milk or food supply the water question was followed.
In recent years water had very seldom been the cause of typhoid outbreaks. All the houses affected, it was found, were on the Croydon high level area supply, and all the eases since November 1, with one exception, arose in the same area.
The Croydon low level water supply from the Waddon and Sur- rey Street wells had been continu- ously chlorinated for sone consider- able time, but this had not been the practice for the high level from wells at Addington and Stroud
