JAPANESE COLUMN REPULSED
Four Hour Battle
In Honan
Hsinhalang, Honat, Dec. 15.
A Japanese column which succeed- ed in crossing the We! River from Lungwangmino in Southern Hopel yesterday morning has been repulsed following a close-range battle with the Chinese forces Insing over four hours, a military despatch from the front states.
Another grim battle is reported to be in progress at Kwancheng western Shantung where the Chinese are continuing to check the Japanese advance.
The Japanese are also rusting re- inforcements from Hantan, along the Pelping-Hankow Ruitway zone, in un attempt to break the Chinese post- tions at Wuan. The Chinese, it is reported, drove bacle a Japanese de- tachment west of Wuon on Monday.
Feverish military movements are going on pt Anyang where they Japanese have brought up 20 addi- tional bombers and huge quantities of munitions, "bombs and other sup- plies. Minor skirmishes are report- ed to have occurred at Poolienssu be-) tween the Chinese and Japanese vanguards-Central News.
Encourages Churches' War Work
A letter to the Catholics of the Vicarlate of Hongkong has been ad- dressed to them by the Bishop. Mar. Valtorta, in which he commends then for their work for the wounded and for all those who have suffered be- cause of the war, and urges them to still greater effort.
Bishop Valtorta points out that all over China Catholics have formed organisations to help way victims in every possible way, and he says that the part taken by those in Hongkong has won for them very special com- mendation. He mentions particularly the preparation of articles for medical relief done by severní groups of ladies and school girla. Work for sufferers at this time, the letter states, is part of the Christian's duly of cimrity and part too of the obligations of patriotism, which is a duty binding in God's law.

"Huilo Hong Kong" is classified as a "crazy" revue and is being present- ed by a cast of naval officers and ladies and others, supported by the Royal Marine Band of H.M.S. Cum- berland, at the Chinn Fleet Club next week.
In a full and varied programme of two hours duration Ühere will bo items to sult every tasle. Fareo, satire, burlesque, song, dance and good humour will be evident in the ifteen turns, and the whole show will combine on basis of high-speed hilarity. The spirit of Christmas will not be forgotten in the abund- ance of mirth and music, and Santa Claus himself will be in attendance at the gaily decorated theatre.
The big number of the evening is an amusing burlesque of the old- fashioned melodrama with dashing hero, sinister villain and beautiful heroine, and a certain amount of Betion will come from the audience itself.
A well-drilled chorus will provide เพ "follies" turns; there will be some
remarkable singing talent in the form of two duets and a solo per- formance; un Impersonation; and several comle sketches. In fact, the show, which is one of the brightest of recent weeks, will progress with a swing from the gay choral prologue to the lavish Anale.
