BRITISH WARSHIPS ATTACKED

One Rating Killed

Off Wuhu

Honkow, Dec. 12.

One British rating was killed, an- other seriously injured and Flag- Cupt, G. E. M. O'Donnell wounded to-day when Japanese Neid batteries and machinefuna fred on H.MS. Ladybird, HLM.S. Bee and the Jar- dino sleamer Sulwo.

The incident occurred at Wuhu at 0.10 a.m. Four direct hits landed on the Ladybird where all the casual- ties occurred. The Sulwo also suffer- ed a direct hit...

The Ladybird, which was anchor- ed at the A.P.C. installation, Imme- diately got under way when the bar- rage began and was fired at until out of range.

The Dee, which is flagship of the Yangtze fleet, had just arrived from Nanking when the firing began.

The B. and S. tug Tsing Tah was also fred on. It was carrying Mr. II. I. Prideaux-Brune, British Con- sul at Nanking, and Lieut.-Col. Lovat-Fraser, British Military At- tache, up river.

Licut.-Cul. Lovat-Fraser narrowly escaped Injury or death when Japan- ese planes machinegunned the Bri- tish Ambassador, Sir Hughe Knatch-17 bull-Hugesten, on the Nanking- Shanghal road on August 20.

British Return Fire

Several British ships a couple of miles up-river from Nanking, includ- ing H.M.S. Scarab and H.M.S. Cricket, were subjected to three separate Japanese air attacks be- tween 1.30 and 3 p.m. No casualties have been reported so it is assumed that there were no direct hits.

The Scarab and Cricket returned the fire with their anti-aircraft arm ment, comprising machine-guns and pompoms.

The Admiralty, Foreign Ofce and Admiral Sir Charles Little, Comman- der-in-Chief of the China Fleet, who is on his way to Hongkong on H.M.S. Falmouth, have been inform- ed of the attacks and representations have been made to the Japanese military and naval authorities here,

The chips involved went up the river from Nanking, when the Japan- ese began their attack on the former cupltal-Reuter.

.

Panay Moves Up

Hankow, Dec. 12. The United States. gunboat, U.S.S. Ponny, America's floating Embassy, at Nanking, has gone further up- river, and is now 28 miles from Nan- king.

Only 14 Americans and a Briton are now in Nanking. The Briton is L. C. Smith, Reuter's correspondent.
