LADY UNDERGRADUATES NOT UP TO STANDARD

"The Club de Recreio "A" negotiated another stiff hurdle in the. Mixed Doubles Badminton League last evening when they entertained University and won by six games to three after an interesting encounter.

But for the all-round strength of | Fisher and Mrs. Clark D-21; beat Ifarris

and Miss McCaw 21-14. the Portuguese team, the game might have been very much closer, in P. K. Hut and Mira J. Chou, the under- graduntes had a pair who were just as food as any of the Recreio com- binations. They proved this by win- ning two games; in fact they were also within striking distance of the third, but falled against M, A. Oliveira and Miss M. Silvi, who are probably the best pair in locni mixed doubles badminton at the moment.

Miss Chon's Improvement is going space and I feel sure that it will not be long before she takes her place among the front rank here. Her greatest weakness at present seems t be an over-fondness for the drop shot, which she has not yet perfected, but experience will soon teach her that admirable though this stroke is when well executed it is not the only win- ning one in badminton. She would rio well to develop an all-round game.

The three University men, K. L. Yong, P. K. 1fui and C. K. Lee winners found it dieult to score against the Recrelo Indles; they had had better support from their own partners, their chances of pulling: off the game would have been con- ess to siderably brighter. But, in fairness tiem, it must be stated that except for Mins Chun, the other two indy "under- grada" were not playing up to scratch. Nevertheless, the standard of bad- minton was very high in pulches.

ST. ANDREW'S SUCCESS Thanks almost entirely to E. F. Fincher and Miss F. Wong, whe won all their three games, St. Andrew's scored their second success of the the season by beating Free Lances by odd game. It was a fine performance in view of the fact that the Free Lances are recognised as one of the most formidable sides in the Mixed Doubles Langue. Fincher and Miss Wong won the games comfortably, but against J. L. Anderson and Miss Mudge Griffiths, they only got through after "deuce" had been called.

"CROONER" DAVIS DEFEATS AMERICAN MARINE

Shanghai, Dec. 4.

While an excited crowd anxiously stood around for a full three minutes after the main event ended, Herbie Gallop, third judge of the final battle between Crooner Davis and Paddy Stoppa handed in his card to award the decision in favour of the Welch Fusilier, following one of the closest fistic battles the Canidrome has ever seen. Eight rounds of toe-to-toe fighting saw the badly cat Stoppa finally vanquished, although it was not until the judges had passed their decision that the audience knew who was the victor.
