THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH. TUESDAY, DECEMBER

W

CAN I LEARN

"HY?, How? When? Where? Motorist and would-be motor- ist readers, ask us thousands of questions in the course of a year.

Every day we are asked to advise on the purchase of a car, settle arguments as to the merits of different makes, probe icence dimculties, advise on the repair and maintenance of cars and motor-cycles-every imaginable question,

Most of the questions we are. asked are sensible-the. motorist to-day i highly intelligent being, and pseudo-technical stuff doesn't put him off.

Regularly, I am asked if my name is really Wisdom; regularly, once a week, I got an abusivo letter from one to whom motor- ing and murder aro evidently synonymous terms,

Hut bane of our life are the in- ventors who think that it only needs the word from us to get Lord Austin or Lord Nuffeld is finance their schemes,

Our desk is cluttered up with qadgels and contraptions that are in- tended to improve the motor-car. Yew of them are successful. The way of the inventor is hard.

✩ ✩ ✩

Can I learn to drive without actually driving a car? I mean, can I teach myself from a book?

If I answered "No" I should not be strictly accurate. Yenra nga Parls Editor of the "Daily Herald taught himself to drive from a book- reasonably successful when he fra took the wheel.

You can learn a great deal about driving and the "innards" of the matur-ear from books, but persoNN) tution in a car is absolutely necessary In these daya,

What is your advice about oli? Some of my friends say that cheap un branded oils are perfectly all right.

Doubtless, there are some satisfac tory cut-prico" oils. Personally, I prefer not to risk damage to an expen- sive machine for the sake of enving a few pence.

Manufacturera advise the use of a high-grade all of the correct type. Pre Aumably they know what they are Lalking about.

Tell me, please, the best way to test the brakes of my car. This informa- tion, now that the police are entitled to try brakes, toould be useful to many of 113.

testing Rough and ready way of brakes is to apply them from a apred of 30 m.ph. and measure the distance It takes you to stop

Look behind you before you try this Lest and use a telegraph pole or Iamp post as a marker. If you enn pull up in 45 feet from this speed, your brakes are in an average state of exilelency. Thirty feet from 30 m.p.h. is very, very good-100 per cent. theoretical effci- · uncy.

Better method is to carry in the car one of the new brake testers just issued to members of the Royal Automobils

Club. It is a small tin box (about the size of a doz. tobacco tin) and it is stood on its end on the car floor.

Apply the brakes at 25 mph. If the tin falls over, the brakes are O.K. If it does not, then adjustment is neces- aary. Frequent use of the teater in advised by the RA.C. A gradual de- crease in braking efftelency is not noticed by someone regularly driving Bie same car.

A neat Bitle brake tester, for clamp- ing to the dashboard, is made by the Ferodo people. They have also in- augurated a service by which, at cer- tain garages, brakes can be tested by a special machlae, and a certificate of their effelency granted. Possession of a recent certificate would be useful if the pulice happen to stop you.

Can you tell me petrol consumption floures of the Ford “8," Flat "500" Morris, &* man "Minx" T

a

On road tesis carried out by me, a Ford averaged 39% m.p... Fiat 64 mpg, a Morris "y" 42 m.p.g, a man "Minx" 33 m.p.g. I lcnow, from Etters, that many owners regularly obtain

better figures, some not so good.

You said, that nowadays the wo- _man_motorist_lenows the difference between a bumper-bar and a big end. Well, what is a big-end?

It is the "big-end" of the connect- Ing-rod (opposite end to the piston) and fils on to the crankshaft. It is Hind with white metal. When the

-lubrication system falls or the oll is unnaturally thin, then the "big- end" becomes hat, the white metal melts, and there is a clanking That Bound from the engine. means you have "run a big-end."

What is the speedometer law-dors it apply to all cars-new and oldr

Bince October 1 lost all tow vehicles (those registered for the first time! except those restricted to a speed of 13 m.ph.. and motor-cycles, of a capn- elty less than 100 cc., are required to carry an instrument (not necessarily a speedometer) that whil indichte to the driver, within a margin of 10 per cent, either way, when he is driving at a speed greater than that lo which the vehicle in restricted by law,,

No-the driving test applies only to those who have not held a driving ilcence prior to April 1, 1034.

H

hold a proviafonal teence and carry the "L" sign on my motor-cycle combination. Can I carry a passenger in the alde-car?

Ye-If the passenger is a licensed driver of at least two years' experience. Otherwise you, will be committing an offence.

What questions will the examiner ask- am shortly going for up driving test?

All questions will be based on the Highway Code-If you have studied the Code carefully you will be able to answer all the questions Think care- Tully before answering - KOTTIC aminers are fond of "trick ” qurationa like, "When is it permissible to pasa a red-light at automistle traße signals? "

What is double-declutching?

CX-

A method of changing gear allently and smoothly insisted on by drivers in the veteran class. Nowadays, with the almost universal use of the synchro mesh gearbox, few drivers still do it.

Actually, double-declutching is sim- ply synclironing the speed of the engine and road wheels so that the gears mesh smoothly-exactly what the synchromesh mechanism of the modern gearbox docs.

I want to become a racing driver— how do I start?

It is a very expensive matter. British motor manufacturers, with the excep- tion of three or four firms, do not sup- port motor-racing. The result is that there are far more drivers than cars,

and more first-class racing mechapies than are needed.

Frankly, I don't think there is much future in motor racing. Few racing drivers have made motor-racing pay.
