Cross-examined. by Mr. Silva, wit- ness said Goodige had shown the banknute and the letter to a number of men in their barrack room, and asked them if they could make any. thing out of the letter.
On the way out with Guodge to visit the house, they passed Ptc. G. L. Ruck, and Goodge called out to him that they were going to "do a bit of detective work."
The lance
corporal had but been at all surrepli- ious regarding the forged, note and showed it to everyone.
Taken to Post Ofec
The regimental postman, L/Cpl. G. S. Brewer, said he had taken a bank- note to the Kowloon Post Office for Goodge and asked the chief clerk, Mr. Fernandes, If it was good. Mr. Fernandes returned 11 saying he was not allowed to change it. As for us witness knew, it was perfectly good.
Ple. Ruck said he had seen the pienellied note, but had not been able to make out what it meant, The banknote had been handed around in the barrack room and witness had also seen it. He had heard that a bool boy had given it to Goodge.
Mr. Kwan objected that this was not permissible in evidence.
Lam Kul, said witness, was one of their boot boys,
After
corroborating Klintworth's deposition that he had been told by Goodge about the "detective work, wiiness concluded by saying that he had known Goodge since April 1930, and had lived with him in the same barrack fuoin. Witness hau never heard anything against him. and in bis (witness') opiilon, he was ja very honest man. An incident when Goodge returned an over-largt amount of change was recalled.
After further evidence, an adjourn. ment was made to this afternoon.
