NOVEMBER 19,

Anglo-U.S. Trade Pact Discussed

Reciprocal Bargain Contemplated

Washington, Nov. 18. Air. Cordell Hull to-day un- nounced that the United States contemplated the negotiation of A reciprocal trade agreement with Britain an had invited interested person to submil suggestions of products which could be considered.

1937.

to the Mr. Hull drew attention fact that exports to Britain in 1836 were valued at $440,122,000, or up- proximately 18 per cent..of American United Kingdom exports, and the supplied the United States with gueda to the value of $200,383,000 or op- proximately eight per cent. of the fotal imports from all foreign coun- tries.

"The preliminary figures for the Arst nine months of 1937 indicate that there is still further recovery in our trade with the United Kingdom,'

ald Mr. Hull. "The export figure nearly 10 per represents a gain of cent, over the corresponding period of the preceding year and imports show a gain of 14 per cent."

is considered as the most important since the In- ception of negotiations for reciprocat trade agreements and it is held to be an important item in Mr. Hull's world peace programme.-United Press.

This announcement

This is the first formal step 10- wards the conclusion of an Anglo- American trade agreement, and is the climax of over a year's exploratory: work by the twe Governments, says Reuter.

Negotiations Start Soon

The actual start of negotiations is expected within a few weeks and must be preceded by public hearings at which interested persons can slalo their objections to reductions in American tariffs being made for any particular class of goods.

According to the Associated Press there is good reason to believe that the British Government has probably consented to grant some American products treatment equal to that which it now accords from the British dominions under Empire reference, belleving that more in- timate commercial ties between Bri- tain and the United States would set an example to the other nations to join in a general movement for reduction of world trade barriers.

The House of Commons made a statement simultaneously with Mr. Hull's announcement.-Router.

Commons Statement

London, Nov. 19. Mr. Neville Chamberlain, Premier, expressed pleasure in informing the House of Commons to-day that in- formal exploratory discussions with a view to reaching an agreed bozis for negotiation for an Anglo- American trade agreement hnd reached a point where both countries felt able to announce that negatio- tions for such an agreement "wert contemplated.

He added that this announcement marked definite well-recognised

step in the United States procedure of negotiations-Reuter.
