At Shanghai something has been done, and is doing, in the direction indicated. I am therefore forwarding Your Excellency's Letter to Mr. Medhurst, Her Majesty's Consul at that Port, with a request that he will communicate directly with Your Excellency.
Mr. Hart, Inspector General of Customs, to whom I have applied, has furnished me with a list of works compiled or translated from foreign writings, but I am not sure that the books are of the Kind you wish for. However, I enclose copy of the list. The Geography at the head of it is from the hand of a Chinese Official, who, when he produced it in 1852, was Governor of Fuchau/Hien (Fujian). He was discredited at the time, but reappeared in 1866, and was made a minister of the Yamen of Foreign Affairs.
