THE finest work of one of the fincat American authors, That's what the blurb shouts on the cover. It's enough to make. Mr. Steinbeck a cynic for life.
If this short, sensational, deftly written,
story sentimental
of George and Lennie, two casual labourers ("Guys liko us," BOYS George, "are the loneliest guys in the world"), had been the writer's first book, it would have deserved. a little ballyhoo.
But Mr. Bleinbeek has already given tan couple of long, major novels-one of them, Is Dubious Battle, a tale of 10 Californian fruit-pickers, being among the mast powerful accounts of industrial conflict that have come aut of the United States. It was a record of dumb men struggling against injus- tice--and was significant and burn- ingly alive
And, since that blurb forces me to the comparison, it makes Of Mice and Men look small. dennie and George are real enough, but their personal tragedy pales. This is simply a pea from the Steinbeck machine-gun. The pen juley and beautifully polished. But it remains a pea.

Krebs is the only creature who sur 'vives unscathed, because his kind of cheating in within the law. The others are just in crime in a hole-and-corner fashion: they expect to be found out now and again and get lodged behind . prison walls for a terin.
The plot is complicated, and in- geniously sustained, yet the charactera Are all recognizable types-and Mr. Curtis makes their haphazard exist» · ence in which they are both hunters and hunted, dramatically credible to the end. It's not a pretty picture that he prints, but he lays on his startling colours with a sure hand.

Constructed on the pre-War plan, and staged in a small Sussex town, it follows the fortunes of three men from childhood to senility at a leisurely, careful place which can be quickened nt the author's desire and sometimes slowed down almost to nothing.
Solid without being atolld, Harvest Comedy is an excellent instance of the cheerful, conscientious crattamust at work on the novelista' Job at story- Lalling. More than competent, though never inspired. Satisfying....

live in the Soviet Union, which has Blato ownership of capital but not political liberty, or in Britain,, Frauce or the United States, which have political liberty but where capital is mostly privately owned?·
Mr. Chamberlin thinks Uberty the most important. A False Utopia assalls all dictatorships. Mass pro- paganda tirough a Med Press and wireless, mass organisation under the authorliy of the one per- mitted party, mass terrorism Wh concentration camps, forced inbour. torture and death for critics and op ponents-whatever the differences of economic institutions, these are all common to Germany, Italy and the Boviet Union.
For the average citizen of those countries, is these political condi tions which are of greater significance than the way in which capital is owned.
Professor Brady thinks that what matters aro economic institutions, and his description Fascist State organ- isation in Germany is aharply hastile, not because it is based on the abroga- ilon of human rights, but because it expresses the "will of control-Capt. talism."

VERY good week indeed for murder stories. If Mr.
Berkeley takes first place it is because he has attempted a.now approach and combined crime with fantasy.
For nearly two hundred pages you follow Mr. Todhunter in his search for atting victim. You may turn back to the dedication to P. G. Wodehouse and wonder. Have patience. A most unusual murder trini is to come, with a climax in the condemned cell and a question answered in the last sentence
(page 520). Try it for something diferent. All that need be known about Clunk's Claimant (Gollancz, 78 d.) la that here H. O. Balley has brought back bis hymn-humming. висе sucking rogue of a slady lawyer at his most sanctimonious. Also you havo Lomas, Superintendent Bell and the shadow of the great Mr. Fortune himself. First-rate.
E. R. Punshion, also rightly relying on an old favourite, pits Detective- Sergeant Bobby Owen against a nest of share-pushers and something worse in The Dusky Hour (nis Gel- Jancz, also: 7. dd.). Here again thero are humour, distinctively good writing and cast-iron detection. P.E. I
