there are no other duties levied on native shipments, but there is a small mast duty.
The Lekin duty payable at Hongkong is:-
For coarse tea 9o cents per picul
For fine tea 1.80 cents per picul
For Camphor 55 cents per picul.
Camphor wood and sugar don't pay.
I believe there are some small duties levied at Amoy on entrance goods, but I have never shipped tea or camphor to that port. Oil pays 1 mace per picul, and ground nut cake 3 or 4 candareens per picul.
Tea and Camphor pay duty there but I cannot say how much.
Chinese ships leaving Formosa get a paper that Lekin duty is paid. There is no other paper. There is no paper of destination given by the Mandarins. When junks come to Hongkong from Formosa they are obliged to go to the Customs Station at In Jan Chan for examination.
Most shippers that have regular trade between Hongkong and Formosa, and are represented here get notice by steamer of the shipments coming to this place, and then usually report at Canton to the Central Customs House, supplying a copy of the manifest and paying duty. I always take that course.
When the copy of the manifest is given and duly paid, notice is sent to the Customs House at Foo Fair Chan that a particular junk with particular cargo has paid duties, and on slight showing of the manifest by the supercargo the junk is allowed to enter Hongkong.
