SHANGHAI NEWS IN PICTURES
Scenes like those pictured above were coniman in Shanghal fast week as pre-lyphoon squalls swept the city, particularly along the Bund and the water-front, where pedestrians found it almost impossible to keep their footing. At top left is shown a big fence which formerly surrounded the Metropole Gardens, now blown down. At top right are shown two ricshas which were caught by the wind and overturned at the corner of Museum and Soochow Ronds near the Capitol Theatre. At left below is another ricsha which was caught by the prankish gale and turned upside down, whlie at right below are shown a cluster of the small cargo boats in Soochow Creek, with gear all battened down for the storm.
Newsboys. Jammed Shanghal's "Fleet Street" (Avenue Edward VII) last week anxious to get the extra editions which were being issued on the North China erisin. Our picture was taken out- side office of one of the most popular Chinese newspapers, and is indicative of the feverish public Interest in nolitical and military development of the day.
One of the uprets of the season was provided at the Shanghai Poto Clob last week when the Light forse, with a 12-goal team, outrode and ouihlt their 10-goal opponents, the American- Troopers (whiter), in the annual clash for the Hoyt Cup to win by the narrow margin of seven goals to six. The match was fought to a thrilling finish before a large crowd of spec- tators, brilliant Individual and team work being exhibited by both sides,
