OUTLOOK IN NORTH STILL UNCERTAIN DESPITE NEW LULL Japanese Demands Refused By China; Further Negotiation Necessary to Avoid War

PEIPING SUBURBS SHELLED

EARLY MORNING

IN

ENGAGEMENT

Shanghai, July 12.

Despite another temporary lull in the fighting around Peiping, the outlook is most uncertain.

Well-informed Chinese sources state that if the Japanese follow the same tactics as they have done in previous incidents, the Chinese authorities are determined to resist to the last man and will not accept humiliating demands from Tokyo.

Chinese military headquarters at Peiping states that fighting to the south-west of Fengtai and cast of Changhsintien, ceased at a little after midnight, but there was still sporadic sniping at 1.30 a.m.

Railway authorities state that five carloads of Japanese munitions have arrived at Fengtai and a full trainload of troops is expected shortly. Eight truckloads of fresh men came into the Fengtai area on Sunday.-United Press..

DENY PEACE AGREEMENT

Peiping, July 12.

Chinese authorities here officially deny that they have agreed to the peace terms as mentioned in Japanese reports. They assert the only agreement entered into provided for the unconditional withdrawal of both sides

from the Wangping area.

It appears clear that this agreement may be re- garded as null and void. so that fresh negotiations will be necessary if further hostilities are to be avoided.-- Reuter.
