Pantomime Society May Be Formed
May Put On Xmas Show On Island
By FIRST NIGHT
-À-strong-movement--is-afoot--in- Hongkeng to produce a pantomime on a grand scale next Christmas.
Hitherto pantomime activities have been left in the hands of the European Y.M.C.A. Amateur Drama- fle Club, which last Christmas pro- duced the highly successful ind delightful "Jack and the Beanstalk."
The present move is to extend the Y.M.C.A. fleld and to produce the next pantomime at one of the bigger theatres on the Island.
Members of the European Y.M.C.A. Amateur Society are stated to be behind the proposal, and it is possible that a Hongkong Pantomime Slety will be formed, embracing, in addi- tion to Y.M.C.A. ployers, those of other organisations.
Those associated with the produc- tion of "Jack and the Beanstalk" last Christmas early realised the limitations Imposed by the West Lounge, particularly as regards stage accommodation and lighting effects.

Agitation For Higher Gold Price
Officials Deny. Any Change Imminent
PropagandaFavours Increased Value
Washington, May 0. Although officials systematically discredit reports of any Imminent change in the price of gold, recent rumours have caused the agents of mining industries and some brokers to agitate for higher instead of lower, prices, which speculative markets recently presumed

Transit Of Mercury
May Not Be Seen
Locally
With regard to the transit of Mer- cury, due to occur to-morrow, the Royal Observatory states that the in- gress should take place at 4.47 p.m., at 77 degrees from the vertex, and the egress at 5.11 p.m., at 83 degrees from the
vertex.
The transit will thus last about 24 minutes and will take place on the right side of the sun. It is doubtful, however, whether it will be observed very clearly locally. The transit is not regarded as of any great astrono-
mical importance.
