Year's CARS

HITHER the trend of automobile design? Manufacturers aro asking this question with rather more urgency than the private owner, since most manufacturers are now "up to their eyes in It" with the 1938. models.

The new models are now under- going test. It is saying in Coventry that the man who liked to camp on that famed Welsh pass. Bwlch-Y-Oroes, would see all the new modein six months before their official "birth,"

Certainly great many testera have been in the wilds of Wales these last few, weeks, with their cars outwardly, at least, current models. But a 1937 radiator and body can, and does, hide many

secrets.

One manufacturer has finished with his 1038 range and is already at work on the 1939 models. Ho thinica ho knows exactly what the public will be wanting in the way of motor-cars two years from now. And, in the past. he has usuntly been right.

brought to mo a two-pedal car which was extremely good. Brake pedal and accelerator were operated by one foot. A ṣldewaya movo- ment of the foot governed the speed of the car -pressure downwards stopped it.

The great advantage was, of course, the time saved, because the foot had not to be transferred from one pedal to another.

At 30 m.p.h. the average driver travels 30 feet while he is removing his foot from the accele- rator to the brake. That time often enough la · the decisive factor in an accident.

The scheme was foolproof-I drove the car some hundreds of miles. Then, so keen was I on the idea, that I took it to one of the smaller manufacturers. His chief designer tried it, and was enthusiastic, Eventual decision was; "Highly interesting but too unorthodox for a small firm like us, One of the big firma should introduce it and we would follow." -

sprung cars at Earl's Court, where the Motor Show will bo hold for the first time, next October, but there is a long way to go yet.

Shock absorbing is at last re- colving a great deal of very necessary attention, and many knowledgeable designers aro pin- ning their faith to springing i̟m- provement in this direction.

Hydraulic shock-absorbers, duto- matically controlled according to road conditions, movement of the axle tightening or slackening the shock absorbers. That La scheme being tried, and success- fully, in most experimental "shops" just now.

Tia Interesting, too, to

note that the popular type of hydraulic shock- absorber is one that was de- sigried some three or four years ago for buses. Made in lightweight material, but of the same dimen- " sions, it is proving eminently satis- factory. Most continental

Most 1937 cars have shock-absorbers that are much too small, to "stand up."

Independent auspension is exer- cising the brains of a good many designers. This form of springing will come, but existing designs are not yet ideal,

machines have it, some British.

A couple of years ago America "fell for it," but the results were the reverse of successful, and

manufacturers many

quickly. though quietly, reverted to the orthodox form of springing. In- creased comfort and road-holding was also accompanied by excessivo tyre wear.

My experience is that a good car with ordinary" old-fashioned " springing and proper shock- absorber will hold any Inde- pendently-sprung .. car round corners and in the wet.

We shall see more independently

The two-pedal car is prophesied. I am atlo doubtful as to whether we shall see it, at least It is in any number, yet awhile. obviously a good thing if the num- ber of controls can be reduced to two from three-the additional safety factor alone would make it worth while,

But our manufacturers hesitate to try anything which smacks of the unorthodox. Conservatinm has always paid high dividends in the motor industry,

Bo the way of the automobile in- ventor is hard indeed. To mention but orin instanco-those now Iamous Gleling brakes, in my opinion the best braking system in the world, were in- vented long before A manufacturer had the courage to fit them, Now most good ears have them.

Ocar-change devices have slumped with manufacturers. Some are inter- esting themselves in the "Cotal" box, a French electrically controlled change which is intricate but very good.

But most designers aro of the opinion that a well-made synchromesh gear-box wants a lot of beating. The pre-selec tive box, which showed such carly pro- mise, is finding few new recruits, and soma manufacturers have reverted to a synchromesh change.

"ELCOME to the owner- driver will be the news that considerably in- creased attention is being paid to the That good-looking drop-head coupe. 2-Hire M.G, with this type of bodywork has been one of the 1937 "winners.” And, particularly for this country, this sort of coachwork, so long as it is silent and easy to erect and lower, is ident.

Chassis design is likely to show little change here, though on the Continent and in the Balted States Increased attention is being pald to "one-piece" chassis and body designs. Tremendous strength is obtained in his, way, and, there are other advantages, but the results of a crash are usually expensive.

"Y summing up of the near future in the automobile world and, pledged to secrecy, I have been in most of the experimental departments during the past few weeks, is that we shall see certain advances in design, one or two extremely interesting new models, but generally the cars will be Improved versions of the 1937 models, which, when all is sald and done, are pretty good.

Bul, as I have said before, there will be all-round price Increases. About 5 per cent, is the figuro usually men- Lioned, though manufacturers would like to make more. But the threat of foreign competition will cause them to keep them as low na possible.

She had tried so many "remedies" -always without result that she hod Bttle faith in anything. “But finally something induced her to try Kruschen Salts and this time sho was not disappointed.

She writes: "For a long, long long time 7 suffered from neuritis. I used to lie awake night after night in agony. My hands and arms just Iell as though I had them in the fire, and I could get no rellef, One day I read of a sufferer who had found relief with Kruschen, so I thought would give it a trial. started takk- ing half a teaspoonful of Kruschen Salts every morning, and I felt better after every dose.
