Fixed Price For Gold Not Maintained
Chamberlain Explains British Policy
Satisfied With Tri-Party Pact
London, April 13.
"
In the House of Commons, Mr. Neville Chamberlain, Chancellor of .the Exchequer, replying to
to questions, stated that it not at present
hat it was
part of the Government's policy to mala tain a fixed price for gold in terms of sterling. He added that the
the price of gold was one of the factors to be taken into account in determining monetary polley from time to time. Mr. Chamberlain further stated that the Government was fully alive to the undesirability of interfering with the flow of business towards recovery.
Mr. Chamberlain cald he was satisfied with the working of the tripartite monetary agreement. The purpose of that agreement was to mafutain the greatest possible equili- brium in the system of international exchanges, avoiding to the fullest extent, any disturbance of that sys- tom by monetary action on the part of any of the Governments concern- ed. He added that the agréement did not refer expressly to the gold value of the several currencles,— Reuter.
DETAILED REPLY
London, Apr. 13. The Chancellor of the Exchequer was asked two questions in tho House of Commons by Mr.
Boothby (Conservative), who has been asso- ciated at various times with the advocacy of "planning and "manag- ed money. He asked firet for an assurance that the Government had no intention of taking action to check the rise in commodities by raising the price of sterling in terms of gold,
I in view of the deflationary elect would have, and also whether the maintenance of cheap money rc- mained the fundamental objective of Government policy.

Mr. Neville Chamberlain replied thai it was not at present part of Government to the policy of the maintain a fixed price for gold In terms of sterling, but the price of gold of course, one of the

SALE OF FLOWERS STREET COLLECTIONS FOR
·DESERVING CAUSE
One of the Colony's best-known and most valuable organisations for the relief of poverty and suffering amongst the poorest of the poor-the Society for the Protection of Children is holding its annual sisect sale of flowers on Saturday next, April 17. The event is bring organised by the Women's Auxiliary of the Society, and as this is one of the Society's
main sources of income it is hoped
that the pubile will show its apprecia
the which tion of the social work Society is doing by liberally respond- ing to the appeal for funds.
Last year, the Society 'dealt with 1,672 new cases, affecting the well- being of 3,087 children. Since its foundation, the Society has handled no fewer than 6,804 cases, involving 11.701 children. Of the cases dealt with last year, one thousand required medical attention.
Some Idea er the poverty-level reached by those whom the Society. helps may be gathered from the fact income that last year the average per head per month of the cases dealt with was as low as $1.73. Every case handled is closely investgated before assistance is given, and the pubile can rest assured that the money It contributes is put to the best pos sible use.

made as to the future, since the men- sures to be taken at any time would depend on the course of events.
Mr. Boothby's second question was about. the tripartite currency agree- ment, and whether it precluded any alteration of the gold value of its currency by any of the three Govern- ments, without prior consultation with the others.
Mr. Chamberlain said he was satis- fled with the working of agreement and added that the purpose of the agreement was to maintain the great- ert possible equilibrium in the systern of International exchanges and to avoid, to the utmost extent, any dis- turbance of that system by monetary action on the part of any of the Governments concerned. There was no express reference to the gold value. of the several surrencies.
These answers led to a supplemen- 'tary question whether he was con- templating any negotiatioris with the United States and France for a wider
not
and more permanent agreement. The Chancellor said he was not con- templating that at the present time, and, to another question, he explained that the last answer was 10- consistant with the expression of hope in the declaration of September 19 that it might be followed by fur- ther measures towards the towering of restrictions of international trade.
