ROPE COMPANY REPORTS KEEN COMPETITION
HOPE FOR EMPIRE PREFERENCE
Little benefit was being derived by the Hongkong Rope Manufacturing Co., Ltd. under Die Empire pre- ference scheme, stated the Chairman (Mr. A. L. Shields) at the annual meeting of shareholders to-day. Mr. Shields riparted a net profit of $10,000, la comparison with a lea of $36,000
for 1935,
In moving the adoption of the re port and accounts. Mr. Shields sald: The result of the company's work- ing for the past year, after charging. depreciation and allowing for directors" and auditors Fees, interest and com- mission to general managers, etc..
shows a net profit of $10,910,49. AN though this profit is small some.satis- faction is to be gained from a com- parison with the figures for the pre- vious year, when a loss of some $36,000 was recorded.
This profit added to the balance brought forward from 1935, makes a sum of $43,066.68 al credit of proft and loss account, which your directors recommend be carried forward to next year's account.
When addressing you last year, I made reference to the severe com petition with which we have had to contend. That competition has, if 1 may say, been intensi0ed troughout the year, particularly in India, Burma. and The Straits Settlements.
I regret having to say again that we are still deriving little benefit under the Empire preference scheme. The
•Hongkong General Chamber of Com- merce rubmitted its views to Govern- ment on the subject of Imperial pre-. ference between Hongkong and the Empire generally, and we hope the revision of the Olawa agreements will obtain for this Company's products preferential treatment in Empire markets, particularly Canada, India ad Burma.
INCREASED TURNOVER Our turnover for the year under re- view shows a marked improvement over tha! for the previous year, but the keen competition which we have had to meet has meant a reduction in profits.

The total revenue earned from rents is $40,585.03, an Increase of $9,212.30 on the figures recorded for the pre- vious year. This is accounted for by the entire factory buildings Mataukok having been let since Jurie, 1936. The additional rent obtained Inerefrom will be fully gained in the accounts for the current your. gards our 28 Chinese dwelling houses "al Kennedy, Town, I regret that only 40 per cent, of the number of flats is occupied.

Turning to the balance sheet, will see that the employees' provident fund is no longer under the heading creditors. This fund is now held in trust by the company in a separate account, the transfer to which has oc- casioned the overdrawing of our bank account.
With regard to our investments, it will be noted that $8,519.75 has been written off for depreciation and these nove stand in the books' at 'market value on December 31, 1936.
As to the prospects for the present- year, I cannot say more than we have -started-Die ̄year-bib"hörmbl“way and we hope that we shall continue to get a fair share of the business offering. Mr. J. P. Braga seconded the adop- tion of the reports and secounts, and the proposal was agreed to.

Remember this. As long as he has enough energy hold the respect of his small but important world. The danger comes when the strain of growing makes ever-increasing demands
his energy. That's when he needs extra nourishment. ~Regular Horlick's, at mid-morning and sup
per-time, gives growing children the nourish- ment and energy they need. Plain or Chocolate- Flavoured, it keeps them lively and alert. It's economicil—just add water --- the milk is in it.
