LLOYDS OF LONDON

WHAT HAS GONE BEFORE! Jonathan Blake, adventurous member of Llodys of London in- aurange syndicate and protege of John Angerstein, one of its locif- ing underwriters, goes to Franca as a spy shiring the early years of Nupoleon's reign. He oscapes, and in the process rosenca # beautiful young English woman, whose identity ho does not knoir. The leaves him without a word when they reach England, but Jonathan, deeply in love with her, arta out to learn her name. To Me disınay, ha finda nho da Lady Elizabeth Stacy, wijn of an insolent, dissolute, member of London nobility whom An- geratein and Jonathan repeat- edly have refused to admit to their business group. Jonathan calls at her house, where ale tries to explain her previous de celt. They are interrupted by Atney, whoan. Insolence sends · Jonathan from the house in a rape. Home peurs later, at Lloyds, Jonathan sera Lorda Stacy try Ang to enter the underseïtterat 1001.

Chapter Twelvo

WHILE Jonathan was wondering when Load Stacy had become

a subscribing member to Lloyd's in order to secure admittance to tho floor of the Board Room, ane of the old "waitera,”, now a cort of mer- geant-at-arma' because he had a photographie memory and knew in- ilmately every subscriber entitled to admission, approached Lord Hincy and touchail him on the arm. "I am anrry to have to call your lordship's attention to that eign yonder," he said, "Your lordship. not being a subscriber, does not poutena the privilege at admission to this board room. I must régitest, immediate obalence to this invio able rule."

Stacy ubrogged , and retired through the door lending into the coffee room, where he leaned over the counter to chaff with the girl Polly, whose physient charms had rounded and ripened with the years, likewise her knowledge of gentle- men on the prowl.
