THE SERIES EVERYBODY IS TALKING ABOUT-INSPECTOR PLAYFAIR'S NOTEBOOK: 13

"D

The Kaklamanos Forgeries

UMBELL,” said Playfair to his sergeant, "I want you to come along to my room.”

"Very good, sir," said Dumbell. "What's up?" . -

"I want to show you something new,”

When the two men were seated-Playfair at his desk; Dumbell, under Playfair's directions, to one side of him-the Inspector embarked on his explanations.

"As you know, Dumbell, I'm in charge of the Kaklamanos case. Dr. Gregory Kaklamanos, arrested last night at Southampton, is concerned in the distribution of forged banknotes on an almost unprecedented scale. They've put eighty thousand pounds' worth into circulation, to the certain knowledge of the Bank. Unfortunately, the case against Kaklamanos- who is, I believe, the most dangerous member of the gang-—is anything but watertight.

"However, he's not the only, one we know about. There's strong cir. cumstantial evidence—not strong enough, unfortunately, to justify an arrest -connecting Kaklamanos with a certain Mr. Fontenoy Hoole. Fontenoy Hoole is a man of education; a dealer, in a high-class way, in old coins and stamps. I've reason to believe that Hoole, who has a country, house near Burford, is the principal distributor of the Kaklamanos forgeries. They've That's been circulating extensively in Cirencester, Swindon and Oxford. pretty fishy in itself.

"Anyway, to cut a long story short, Hoole's come here, at my request, for a chat. He's waiting in an ante-room now. I want to try and establish -what probably he'll deny-that there's some connection between him and Kaklamanos. All you have to do, Dumbell, is to sit there, and to listen care. fully to what transpires.”

"Very good, sir,” said Dumbell.

Fontenoy Hoole was in his early fifties; a well-dressed man with an air of distinction about him. Dark glasses gave him an enigmatic appearance. He bowed courteously to Playfair (though not without a hint of irony), and taking out a gold cigarette-case, invited the Inspector to smoke. Playfair os courteously declined.

"I won't beat about the bush," he said, motioning Hoole to a seat. "I appreciate your coming here, and I'll tell you at once what it's about. P’H put all my cards on the table. There is evidence, Mr. Hoole, which connects you with Dr. Kaklamanos. And Dr. Kaklamanos, as you may have heard, has been arrested for forgery."

I Hoole started at Playfair, but betrayed no agitation. Dr. who he anked.

"Kallamanos."

"Never heard the name."

"Dear me," said Playfair, "I was afraid that's what you'd say, Mr. Hoolo. You're not willing to help us? You don't, of course, have to answer ques- tions; on the other hand, if you're not concerned in the forgeries there's no reason why you shouldn't."

"I'd do anything I could to help," replied,Fontenoy Hoole emphatically. "That's what I'm here for. But as for your Doctor Kak-whatever you said just now-] tell you, I've never heard of him."

"You'd do anything to help?" said Playfair. "You meen that, Mr.. Hoole ?"

"Certainly."

"Then will you begin by establishing your innocence?" "Of course. But how?"

"By submitting yourself to an Association Test."

"What on earth," asked Hoole, "is that?"

Playfair laughed. “It's quite simple. I read out a list of words; to each you respond at once with the first word that suggests itself to you. For instance, I say Bradman; you respond with Century, Dumbell hero times your reactions with a stop-watch. I warn you," he added, with a smile, "I shall try and stump you if I can."

Hoole hesitated. Then he, too, half-smiled. “I'll take your test with pleasure."

"Right," said Playfair. He took up a prepared list of words; handed a duplicato to Dumbell. “If you're ready, Mr. Hoole, we'll start."

There follows the list of words read out by Playfair, with Hoole's res«" ponse to each. Each dat between word and response marks an interval of one second,
