PUBLIC SCHOOL

PACIFISTS

By A Special Representative

A move to give a lead to the Nation on the issue of Peace and War, Henrnament and Disarmament, was instituted at the Church. Assembly when a motion entitled "Peace and National Defence" was submitted,

The debate was adjourned ufter two and a half hours. In that time, successive sponkers from the epis- cupal bench downwards made plain that the whole body of the Church has become aware of a responsibility greater than any with which it has Весп saddled during the last few

yours.

Outstanding features of the debate

were:

that the Repented declarations bearing of arms is An honourable Christian public service.

An impassioned speech by the Bishop of Birmingham (Dr. Barnes) in defence of pacifist principles.

Strong pleas for the union of Eng- Jand and Germany and other Chris- tian nations against the forers of ntheism.

REARMAMENT DEPLORED

The general effect of the motion is that the Assembly deplores general rearmament, colts upon Christians to promote international goodwill; and int it supports the Government in their efforts to uphold the Covenant of the League and to secure general reduction of armaments.

Finally, the Assembly is asked to recognise the right of the Government to the support of Christian citizens in maintaining such forces as the Gov- ernment deem necessary in the pur- suaner of this policy.

The debute was conducted with no hint of partisan spirit or strong feel- ing. All the speakers but the Bishop of Derby (Dr. A. E. J. Rawlinson) were agreed that it was incumbent upon the Church to give a lead in times more troublous than any since the establishment of the Assembly.

"We have to defend an ideal," de- clared the Dean of Winchester (Dr.- E. G. Selwyn) in putting forward the motion. "Do we think that our coun- try's heritage of liberty is worth while? That is the question which I would like my friends who are ex- treme pucilista to face. Their doc- trine of unilateral disarmament is fundamentally anarchie."{

THE LESSER EVIL

The Archdeacon of Coventry (the Ven. Richard Brook) deplored the effect that views held in the Univer litics and Public Schools were having upon recruiting and the numbers and quality of those "offering Themselves for this form of public service."

war is always an ev

an evil thing," he said, "but there may be occasions on which it is the lesser, of two evils, and therefore relatively right."

The Bishop of Birmingham put forward the pacifist view with ex- treme fervour. He told of men who were imprisoned for their defence of what they deemed to be Christian

principles-of his efforts to promote peace by egreement at the time when "the principle of the knock-out blow prevalled." He told of the ineffec- tiveness of all defence measures among them gas masks in which "the

majority of those present would not survive."

The Provost of Coventry appealed Christian people of the world. The great link between Germany and Eng- land, for example, was the existence in Buch country of millions of people who follow Jesus Christ." Other speakers emphasised his argument.

was the union of Christian peoples against war and atheism. The debate was brought to un

end by the Archbishop of Canterbury, after the Rev. W. H. Torrance and the Bishop of Derby had expressed op- posing points of view. Mr. Torrance foresaw complete disharmony on the outbreak of war, unless the Church Assembly could r make a definite pro- nouncement. The Bishop of Derby declared, "We shall not help at all by passing a clear-cut motion."
