P. M. G. DROPS BAIRD SYSTEM
By A CORRESPONDENT
London, Feb. 21.
ON the instructions of the Postmaster-General the Mar- coni-E. M. I. television system has been adopted by the B.B.C. as the standard system of transmission for the Alexandra Palace station.
This announcement was made last night from the G.P.O. It means that there will be no further transmissions on the Baird system from Alexandra Palace.
Hitherto, the two systems station will not be substantially have been operated during altered before 1038," says the Post Office, adding that in consequence the alternate weeks.
240 lines-25 frames per second stan- dard will be discontinued.
Next week's transmissions should have been on the 'Baird system.
Instead, it will be Marconi:

HEALTHY STATE OF FUND
London, March 3. In moving the adoption of a re- solution approving of a draft order dealing with the reduction from six to three days of the waiting period before unemployment beneft is
est is paid, and an additional day's lengthening of the period of benefit enjoyed by men who have worked regularly dur- ing the past five years while drawing relatively little in- beneßt, the Minis- Mr. Ernest Brown, in of Labour, Mr. ter the House of Commons, said the re- ceipts of the fund for 1930, amounted to £65,707,238, being 21,000,000 more than the previous year, despite the fact that from July 7 there had been
reduction of one penny cacli from the contributions of employers, workers and the State.
Payments
оп the other hand, amounted to £6,045,000 less than in 1935. This was due to crease of employment and a decrease of unemployment. The Advisory Committee reported surplus of £17, 537.470, so that the accumulated

Filmdom is looking forward with considerable anticipation to the new picture Charlie Chaplin is preparing to launch with Paulette Goddard as the star and a surrounding cast of the finest available talent.
As yet without a title-tentatively called "Production No. 6"-it will not only be the comedian-producer's first attempt at a talkie, but the he will make in which second picture he does not appear.
Chaplin refuses to give out any in- formation on his latest production merely announcing that it will be a comedy-drama with colourful Shang- hai, Honolulu and other foreign locales as backgrounds.

MR. BAIRD SURPRISED
Mr. John L. Baird, founder of the company which bears his name, was surprised when I told him the news last night.
"I knew it was coming," he said,
"but I did not think the Post Office would announce it like that,
"I prefer not to make any comment because in a day or two 1 expect my company will make an official state-
ment.
"Meanwhile, I ought to point out that the Baird sets which we have solid are not affected by the decision.
"They receive the 405 line trans- missions perfectly without any al- teration."
I asked: "Will this mean the and of Baird transmissions for good?"
"Good heavens, no!" Mr. Baird replied. "It only affects the present Alexandra Palace transmitter,”
The B.B.C. has for some time urged that a decision should be taken by the Advisory Committee as to which standard should be adopted.
The arrangement calling for two transmitters, two sludlos, and two
staffs at Alexandra Palace was costly
and inconvenient.
FOR THE BEST Moreover, the space wasted could
be spared.
General opinion of B.B.C. and ́ redlo manufacturing people to whom I spoke last night was that a great advantage to television will result from the operation of only service.

in on his own television set since last I must say, as one who has looked November, when the service began, that the Post Office decision seems to be the right one.
On comparision, I have found the Marconi-E.M.I. transmissions steadier and less liable to minor but irritating faults.
FLEXIBILITY COUNTS Moverover, the flexibility of the The that in addition to the new record-cameras used by Marconi give some ing equipment they will have the interesting effects on the screen. most expert technicians, the latest in cameras and last, but not least, the personal supervision and direction of Chaplin himself.
It will elevate to front rank star- dom Miss Goddard, whose first im- na portant film appearance was Chaplin's leading lady in "Modern Times." In-
Balance at the end of the year was
more
nearly £30,000,000, or £0,700,000 than the Committee had estimated in their previous report.
There was no opposition to the motion, but some Labour criticism that the concession should, in view of the statc of the fund, be more generous.-British Wireless,

In reply to a Commons question regarding the prospects of mediation in Spain, Mr. Anthony Eden sald the questions to whether. His. Majesty's Government can take any steps to provide basis of negotia- tion between the contending parties was constantly being considered in the light of developments.
