THE FALLACY OF "ONE HALF" INTERPORT TRIALS

Players'

Unhappy

Position

SELECTORS SHOULD TAKE NOTE

Yesterday's Hockey

(By "The Pilgrim")

THE fallacy of staging

Interport hockey trial matches in which players appear only for one half of the match was exposed yesterday when a game of | ̈ this calibre was played on the Navy ground.

The effect in several instances was that just as a player had warmed to his job, he was re- quested to atand down and somebody else came into the team who went through a simi- lar experience.

As an interport trial yesterday's match was a fallure. For one thing the opposition (provided by the Boyni Engineers) was weak, for another because there was too much chopping and changing of players, and thirdly because several of the Colony's best players were not on view,

Another lesson which the selectors should have learnt from this game is the desirability of informing the Army players by letter of their selection in- stead of relying entirely on Press in- formation. What is more, notification should be given of

alteration-In any the venue. This match was ad- vertised in the newspapers to inke place either on the U.S.R.C. ground or Marina. Yet 24 hours before the match was played the Navy ground was chosen and no intimation was given to the Press about IL

These are important details which the selectors would do well to study. The Interporters proved much too strong for the Royal Engineers, win- ning by six goals to nil. Licut. Wright notched four and S. A. Fow- lef and Pyara Singh one each. Four of the goals were scored in the first half.

Two Enportant "selected" Interport players failed to appear-Pataub and Gerjinder Singh of the Kumaon Tuftes. Neverthless the Interporters had

Top, a Shan ghal player kicks ahead on the point of being tackled; below, Hongkong forwards away on a forceful rush. The visitors closed their tour with ane other fine victory, defeating the Rest 26-3 before a bout 1,000 spectators.
