THE FOUNDING OF THE DIOCESE OF VICTORIA

HE Diocose of Victoria (Hongkong) was founded by the consecration of the Rov, George Smith as Bishop of China and Japan (except the Yangtze Val- loy, where Bishop Boone, of the American Episcopal Church was already at work) and a gift of £20,000 for Endowment of the Bishopric.

Official notification of the founding of the Bishopric was contained in a Government Notification, issued by Major W. Caine, the Colonial Secretary, on January 1, 1850, which stated:

ER Most Gracious Majesty having been pleased to issue Letters Patent under the Great Seal of the United Kingdom, erecting the Island of Hongkong and its Dependencies into a Bishop's See and Diocese, to be called the Bishopric of Victoria, and appointing the Reverend George Smith, Doctor in Divinity, to be ordained and consecrated Bishop of the said
