IN WAR PREPARATION SEEN
London, Feb. 20.
Certain correspondents' suggestions that the British re- armament programme constitutes abandonment of Britain's traditionally friendly policy towards Japan, is scouted in official circles here as "ridiculous."
It is pointed out that there is no change in Britain's policy towards Japan and that the reasons for the re-armament programme
namely, are those already given in the House of Commons,
the necessity for the country to bring her armaments up to a level commensurate with her responsibilities.
The reasonableness of the British case is acknowledged in Europe. Even Germany and Italy are refraining from making any hostile comment.-Reuter.
WILL IT BE PEACE OR WAR
Washington, February 19. Opinion is divided respecting the result of the British re-armament proposals. Some believe the stupendous expenditure is designed as a warning to nations who thought to outstrip Britain in naval development. There could only be the United States, Japan and Russia. No others are capable. But, paradoxically, some constructive discussion of peace and disarmament-may result from the British decision, it is felt.

STILL TALKING NEUTRALITY
Loudon, Feb, 10. The Non-Intervention Sub-Com- mittee met for two and a half hours this evening.
It is understood that Britain and Portugal are still discussing details of the control scheme, by which British observers would be placed in Portugal.
After discussing the question of zones for naval patrols, it was de- elded to adjourn the discussion until Monday-Heuter.

HUNT BALL REVELLERS UNAWARE OF TRAGEDY
Grim tragedy occurred in the Peninsula Hotel shortly before 11 o'clock last night.
On the sixth floor, the annual Hunt Ball, one of the big social events of the season, was in merry progress.
The music and happy laughter wafted down to a suite on the third floor, where a young American socialite, Miss Ruth Elizabeth Claire Gregg, aged 30 last month, lay dying an her bed, an empty glass clutched in her right hand.
In the bathroom was an empty bottle, which shortly before had contained half a pint of Lysol.

the arrival of her parents. Her father is a retired Colonel of the U.S. Army..
Inquiries by Telegraphi representatives elicit that Miss Gregg has been most depressed since the beginning of the month because she has not heard from her people.
Her father and mother are under- stood to have cabled in mid-January, stating that they were then leaving for Hongkong, vin Europe. Since then she has not from them. Her birthday, it is stated, passed un- noticed.
With the exception of a shari visit tu Canion in December; Miss Gregg has not left Hongkong. She is stated to have been of a retiring disposition, and made few friends „during her, stay in this Colony..

A reconstruction of events lending up to the tragedy show that after five members of the party had left to dine at the Hongkong Hotel, Mlsa Gregg went up to her room on the third floor of the Peninsula, arrang- to meet Dr. Bolin a few minutes later.

"When some time had elapsed, Dr. Bolin, who also resides in the Penin- sula Hotel, rang through to Miss Gregg's room to find out the cause of her continued absence.
Miss Gregg had evidently already swallowed the polson. She must have been in a semi-conscious con- dilon for, although she lifted the receiver of her bedalde telephone to answer the call, she did not speak.

FIERCE FIGHT WITH POLICE
Waukegan (11.), Feb. 19.
The success of the General Motors Corporation's stay-in strikers in defying the injunc-: tion brought against them has brought a wave of alt-down strikes throughout the country.
Six
persons were injuret in violent clash between eighty-five sit- down strikers occupying the factory of the Fansteel Metallurgical Corpora- tion and a hundred Deputy Sheriffs who were attempting for the Arst
Ume to enforce the Court order or urrest the strikers
The strikers sprayed their op- ponents with acid through fro hoses and throw volleys of nuts, bolts and spanners at the Depules, who hurled tear-gas bombs through the windows of the factory and brought up baltering-ram for use against the doors.
After a two-hour battle, the Sheriff withdrew his forces and conferred with offelüls of the Company, who authorised him to use any method to remove the strikers.
The heat and light were then turned off from the factory, and the strikers wrapped themselves in blankets against the icy cold.
The strikers are asking for recog- nition of the John Lewis Industrial Steel Unlon-Reuter.
