Contract for Hongkong Firm Reported Let
FILIPINO MINERS WILL TEACH LOCAL CHINESE
The Telegraph understands that one of the largest contracts in the history of the Colony mining has been given to a Hongkong firm by Messrs. Neilson & Co., Inc., the prominent Manila mining engineers.
The contract is in connection with the property of the Hongkong Mines, Ltd., on the Kwangtung-Hongkong border, about 27 miles from Hongkong proper.
It calls for the erection of a small township on the site of the mine. Buildings will include large canteens and quarters for European and Chinese employees, machine shops, office build- ings, assay laboratory, hospital, three executive staff residences and a mill building.
These buildings will be constructed of a locally made spuncrete tile, and are expected to be completed before the end of May. It is expected that the crushing mill will be put into operation by the middle of the year.
Due to the present price of lead and the tendency for the market to rise, mining engineers believe that the property in question is an attrae- five proposition. Very good outcrops of the vein have been found at con- siderable distaners from the old workings, and all headings were topped in good ore.
It is understood that Chinese labotar will be used in working the mines. A large number of Filipino workers, however, are being brought from Manila to teach the Chinese how to mine, and these Filipinos will be re- tained unit the native labour becomes proficient.
Mill construction work is under the supervision of Mr. C. G. Brown. A

DYSENTERY BREAKS OUT IN MEMPHIS DISTRICT
New York, Feb. 7. Dysentery has broken out in the camp of the flood relief workers at Memphis, Tennessee.
The efforts of 120,000 of these workers have hitherto kept the Mississippi within its bank at this point, but the erest of the flood has not yet reached Memphis and the slow fall of the river at Cairo-only three inches in 60 hours--is worrying the engineers, especially in view of the forecasts of further heavy rain and a rise of 16 inches at St. Louis. '.
Women and children are still being kept away from Cairo. The Red Cross has requested Coast Guard boats to stand by, ready to evacuate the men who are manning the levees at a moment's notice.
There are now 415 known dead in the Middle West food
area. The American Red Cross is caring for 170,000 destitute familles, and' bas raised $10,755,000 by public sub- scription for flood relief.
Meanwhße, floods have tri- vaded California. Three mem- Ders of film colony were drowned 10-day in serious floods following torrential rains, which inelled the snow in the bills. The dead include the star Miss. Judith Allen, who was working on location
when she marooned.
Hundreds of other people were evacuated from their homes by boots in the nick of time, as the waters rose and carried away their houses.- Reuter.
