The frequency with which these fadings occur in commer. cial short-wave transmission has increased rapidly since the last sunspot minimum.

show that the fading is due to the bright eruptions, on the Sun, and it appears, in some cases at least, to occur simultane- ously with the outburst of the eruption.
The eruption apparently has some effect on the re- gion of the outer atmos- phere, called the lonosphere. Short-wave radio signals are normally reflected back
