ITALY AND GERMANY MAY

RISK CONFLICT TO THWART RUSSIA

ANXIOUS TO LEARN IF BRITAIN

IS PREPARED TO

INTERCEDE

Rome, January 15.

Reports are current in diplomatic circles that the Italians and Germans are prepared to despatch as many as 100,000 troops to assist General Francisco Franco unless Moscow abandons her alleged project of "communizing Spain."

It is understood, however, that Italy and Germany first wish to see whether Britain would intercede to block such an attempt.

It is reliably stated that Signor Benito Mussolini and General Herman Goering are delaying the replies by their respective Governments to the Anglo-French demand for a statement of policy on intervention in order to permit the Fresh Italo-German re- inforcements already on their way to arrive in Spain, and secondly, to determine whether the British will co-operate in preventing the establishment of a Communist base in Spain.-United Press.

ITALIAN PERTURBATION

Rome, Jan. 15.

Following an interlude to-day, further meetings between Signor Benito Mussolini and General Herman Goering, German Air Minister and special envoy, are to take place to-morrow. The discussions then will deal chiefly with the Spanish question. They will converse on Sunday also.

It is understood that the Italians are perturbed by the failure of General Francisco Franco's failure to make rapid head- way against Madrid, while there are disquieting reports of Communist demonstrations at Perpignan, on the French side of the frontier, in the newspapers.

It is stated that the conversations will not in any way modify the existing politlent situation and it is denieri that General Goering engaged in obtaining the assent of Italy to German penetration
