MARKET HIGHER

YESTERDAY

New York, Jan. 7. 5. C. & F. Dew Jones Summary of yesterday's markets:-Trading to-day was the heaviest than for any day since the middle of November and gained new strength as the session progressed towards the close. The tape-machines were clogged with sales. Shorts covered on villities. The market averaged new highs alnce 1933. Steels, rails, copper, all silvers and amusements were tied up. The Bonds Market and the Curb Exchange were both higher.

Wall Street Journal S. C. & F. Morning Comment: The motor strike is bound to have a decided effect on power, steel and rail shares. Profita per car are likely to be smaller this year than last year. Foreign newa has had little effect on the market The rally in auto-shares is largely due da

to short covering. Wall Street expects telephone expansion to con- tinue this year. There is increased interest in rall equipments. Much of the recent switching into, oll shares

better was due to the

statistical position.

S. C. & F. New York Office Cables: Stocks: Verlous issues to-day were Aggressively bought, as traders turn bullish, anticipating an early settle ment of the motor strike. The Bell ain in Telephone System shows the number of stations for December of 93,000 ns against 47,000 for De- cember of last year.

The

Colton: The Trade and foreign interents were active buyers. There is a slightly better feeling with re- gard to export possibilities. sharp revival in the textile demand is nitributed in some quarters fear of labour troubles in the in- dustry later. There have been some private forecasts of an increase in acreage.
