London, Jan. 6.

The Minister for Co-Ordination of Defence, in a speech at Glasgow, prophesied that Britain would never introduce conscription in peace-me and ridiculed the fantastic notions entertained in some quarters abroad regarding the alleged failure to solve the recruiting problem.

"I think," he

The clergyman was not. A little thrilled, for the names of the mur- derers were those of the parish clerk and sexton, both of whom were at that moment close beside him in the church. He did not say anything to them about the paper, but directly service was over, he went to Magistrate and told him about it. Judge of bis, surprise and con- sternation when on showing the Magistrate the paper it proved to be blank! The writing he had seen on It had entirely disappeared.

(P & © BUILDING, CONNAUGHT ROAD CENTRAI HONGKONG,

Both the house and orchard in its rear were searched, with the result that several human remains were dis-

the covered, including

recently interred body of a man. The sexton confessed that he was guilty of

named the least six murders, ond parish cleric as his accomplice. Both men were arrested, tried, and exe-

it all cuted. And it I came about through that occult writing.

at

Another instance of a dream play- ing an important role in crime is to be found in the life of the Rev. H. Calcott, who had a living in Bristol, Mr. Calcott's, whom for A

of friend convenience sake I will style Mr. Davis (Mr.

(Mr. Calcott does not state name), came to him one day, in a state of great agitation, and said he had dreamed several times in suc- cession that a woman of very strange appearance had come into his. Mr. Calcott's bedroom, and tried to mur- der him while he was asleep. Mr. Calcoit merely smiled and told him not to be superstitious; dreams were Just dreams and nothing more.

Some years later, Mr. Calcott and his friend were travelling in Ger- many, and, being overtaken by n storm one night, they were forced to seck shelter in a lonely country ina. Directly. Mr. Calcott's friend saw the landindy, who was very handsome In a rather peculiar and somewhat sinister style, he started violently and, drawing Mr. Calcott aside, he whispered in his car, "She's the wo- mun of those dreams I told you about."

In the Dead of Night

SO

Mr. Calcott was inclined to doubt this, but his friend Davis was very positive and earnest that he de- cided not to get into bed but to sit up and watch. In the dead of night, when the house was very still, the door of his room was gently opened and a figure, holding a knife in one hand, crept stealthily to the bed. It was the landlady.

Fortunately Mr. Davis was near at hand" with his servant,-and-after-a desperate struggle. the woman was disarmed and overcome. in the morning she was handed over to the police, who searched the inn and dis- covered a number of human remains in various stages of decay.

The woman was tried for murder, convicted, and executed. The night| before her execution she confessed that, alone and unaided, she had either stabbed to death or smothered over 20 people who had sought night's lodging in the lan. After killing Mr. Calcott she intended to kill Mr. Davis and lits servant, and doubtless, would have done so brut for that dream, originating from the Other Side.

These are but & few authentic instances of the manner in which the Powers behind the Scenes, in other words, the Occult, have from time to time played an important role in the prevention of crime and the solution of mysteries which, but for their op- portune assistance, might otherwise have remained unsolved.
