U.S.S.R. To Build 2,000-Mile Line
R.A.F. Will Be Second To None'
-U.S. Air Chief THEODORE PAUL
WRIGHT, key man in America's aeronautic brain- trust, chief designer for one- fourth of the U.S. Air Force, reported "All's well for the R.A.F" on concluding his back-stage tour through
'plane factories in this coun- try, France, Holland, and Germany.
This was his "summing up" In his Savoy Hotel suite:-----
"Britain has nothing to worry about, as far as the air is con- corned. The 'plane strength now being provided will put Britain's air force second to поле."
SAW TEN FACTORIES His conclusions are based upon in- spection of ten icey 'plane factorien bullding R.A.F. equipment; also upon comparison with the much-pub-
licised race for air supremacy on thej Continent.
He said:-
"French progress is rapid, but not rapid enough. There is still an obvious lag between plane de sign and 'plane production.

REDS V. PRIESTS
IN CHINA
MANY KIDNAPPINGS
Vatican City, Jan. 1. Kidnapping of native Catholic priests by Com- munist bandits is becoming. alarmingly frequent, accord- ing to a report issued by the Holy Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith.
According to this report no less than eight Chinese priests have been kidnapped during the past two years by red bandits.
Grave concern in high Vatican quarters has now been caused by the kidnapping of a Chinese priest of Cheng Tu. The priest was wounded rind taken prisoner together with
fleen of the most prominent In- habitants of the town and carried away in the mountains. He was In charge of the Apostolic Vicariate of Cheng Tu.
The bandits have informed the local missionary slation that the priest will be released following the pay ment of one thousand dollars. No agreement has been reached so far and the priest has not yet been released.
Kidnapping is always accompanied ↳ plundering, according to the re- port. As a result of these numerous robberies the supply of brevarics is nently exhausted and it is feared that the local priests will be forced to sub- stitute the recitation of the rosary for the divine office.
Meanwhile the clergy has been ad-
vised to abandon the presbyteries in pace in preparation for Ger-which they dwell near their churches man-Russian-Japanese war.
Russin is outstripping Japan in purchases of these planes at a ratio of nearly two to one. In addition Soviet factories are turning out hundreds of fight- ing planes under forced produc- tion schedule.
During the past 30 days Soviet alr- plune purchases in this country totalled approximately $1,000,000, the United Press was informed. These purchases were said to be merely the prelude to other orders already placed for future delivery or concerning which bona fide inquiries have been made of American ma
manufacturers.
During the same period-Japan-was- reported to have purchased approx- imately $600,000 worth of American airplanes, and has placed orders, fur,

Coroner Milner Ifelme, at the West Ham inquest said: "That gruesome play was, no doubt, responsible for the means Woodruff chose to end his life."
The verdict was "Suicide while of unsound mind."
The coroner added that he could not say if the man meant to take his life before listening to the play.

Roosevelt Anticipating
Private Life
New York, Jan. 1. President Roosevelt is looking forward with keen anticipation to private life and he has no in- tention of seeking a third term, according to an article by George Creel in 21 recent issue of Collier's magazine.

Only re- cently, in conversation with an in- timate, he said, 'on January 21, 1941, when a new president takes over, I will be in Hyde Park having the time of my life"."

stated.
One of the obstacles in the way of immediate placing of many of these orders, omelals said, is the possibilly that the American Neutrality law may prevent shipment of the planes,

VHILE Moscow to-night celebrating in carnival the end of the |eighth All-Union of Soviets Congress and the newly. adopted "democratic" Con- stitution, Stalin made known details of the Soviet rearmament programme, which will make the Red Army, Navy and Air Fleet the greatest fighting ma- chine the world has ever known.
Plans for this programme were decided during three days "council of defence" held in the Kremlin with his five Red war lords, Minister of War Voro- shilov, his deputy Tuchachevsky, Chief of General Staff Yegorov, Commander-in-Chief of Far Eastern Army Bluecher, and Chief of Cavalry Buganny.

5. The transference of war indus- try plant from places vulnerable to foreign aircraft to the centre -of-Russia.
Preparatory work on the new "Soviet Maginot Line" will begin within the next fortnight. Three bundred thousand workmen will be employed on the western frontier alone as soon as ploris for fortifica- tions are ready.
Voroshillov, at the end of the "council of defence," told Stalin he was not satisfied with the efficiency of the Soviet Intelligence service, which, he claimed, was riddled with German spies. Stalin gave him full; powers to carry out a purge of the Intelligence service within the next! few weeks.
