HILHARMONIC Society's newly formed orchestra and music lovers of Hongkong generally, will learn with regret of impend- ing denarture from the Colony of Bandmaster A. B. Yule, of the 2nd Bn., Lanca- shire Regiment, who leaves for India on January 12.

Mr. Yule has been a tower of strength to Philharmonic in past two years, and has built up 4 subsidiary organisation which, many people believe, will add considerably to Colony's prestige in years to

come. Hongkong sadly lucka a Municipal Orchestra, such as is enjoyed by Shanghai, and formation of Philharmonic Orchestra was long overdue.

With departure of Mr. Yule, Phil harmonic must east around for an- other baton-wellder and it won't be easy to fill the shoes shortly to be vacated.

Mr. Yule is conducting a farewell orchestra practice at the Seamen's Institute at 8.30 p.m. on Friday, January 8.

Incidentally, membership of or chestra Is open to any Hongkong music enthusiast who can play ap propriate instruments. Practices have been in past, and doubtless will be in the future, regularly held,

SUPPOSE you have heard of little Audrey, whose Mother sent her to the shop for fly paper, and little Audrey Laughed and laughed and laughed because she knew that flies did not use paper.

I was reminded of this little story by your criticism of the Philharmonic Orchestra In last Saturday's Enter- tainment Page. The Philharmonie laughed and laughed and laughed because they knew there was no piccolo.*

WHY don't you write some-

thing about ZBW. It is almost six months since you con- dueled your Radio Vote, In which the Postmaster General raid he was so interested. Yet, as far as I can gather, no effort whatever has been made to put into

practice the suggestions mude by readers. ZBW has been deplorable lately. It let us down badly over the Abdien- tion-of-King Edward-and-I-was- оле of the many listeners who missed his farewell broadcast. because it was not re- entirely, jayed at the effort

made to relay the Nanking specelt by Mr. H. H. Kung last week, nor has ZBW made any effort to relay Zeesen and other short wave sta- tions, as requested by an over- whelming number of your readers.

Incidentally. Just prior to the of the second set of the Rehearsal of Philhar- monic's "Maid of the Moun- Lains", ZBW broadcasted a re- cording of experts from the same play, by the London Symphony Orchestra! Ds musicians, quality and most times of arrogant and over-

bearing mien, so much so that they

are very unpopular with the Anglo- Saxons.

The Little Club (Mr. Berg, man- ager) operates two establishments, and Mr. Berg often comes to Amer- ica In search for reasonably priced and good bands. Then there is the Paramount Ballroom, which has a sporadic - succession of success and fallure-the-Canidrome, which-oper- ates the Casanova Ballroom and a night club. There still remain establishments, many second-rate which are mostly speculative, and the author especially desires to warn all

musicians that any job in China a risky, regardless of the fact of having a contract. There seems to be a lack of responsibility that you won't find in your dealings in Japan. Tlentsin-This Is divided into several concessions, controlled by the French, English, Italians, Japanese and Russians. The town is dance mad, especially noticeable in the French and Japanese concessions, with one Rumptuous night club in the Itallon district. Most of these.. Jobs are held by resident Russians of inferior callbre, drawing good money, but no contracts are signed, with the exception of the American Country Club.

As a result, the cream of concert and dance work is performed by expatriated or imported Hun- garian and Central European or chestral units of dubitable" colibre.
