HE right toys, given at the right time, do more than keep children amused and busy: they help to develop certain abilities and functions.
It is generally believed that as long as a child is kept occupied with a toy it does not matter at what he is playing; it is all too eldom realised tha while one toy only keeps the child busy another educates him.
With constructive materials he not only develops the skill of his hand, but also his imagination la planning and anticipating what he wants to make. He develops an appreciation of materials, and what he can best to with each of them, and, above all, the perseverance to stick to un be- cupation until something has been achieved.
The sense of sluty in work does not develop in a child who has not learned to accomplish things in his play. There are, therefore, no more desirable toys for children from the second to the sixth year than hollow blocks, bricks, modelling wax.paper and pencil, and painting colours.
